BETA BEAT Sigma Alpha Epsilon s University of montana spring 2016 THE Alumni Involvement Breathes New Life into Montana Beta Chapter Stronger than ever after a DeCaDe of harD Work anD Support I want to reflect on what has been an incredible journey over the last 10 to 11 years in the history of Montana Beta. This began with a '60s reunion in 2003, when we were told that due to the sorry financial condition and low membership of the chapter, the chapter house was under contract to be sold. That fall at Homecoming, Jim Mountain '81, John Greener '79, and Scott Johnson '81 decided that couldn't happen, so they made calls and were able to gain some help. The chapter numbers were down, the physical plant was in bad shape, the UM administration was unsupportive, and the Greek system in general was in shambles. It took a real leap of faith, lots of hard work, a few dedicated individuals, financial commitment, and a number of mistakes, but we believe we have succeeded in reviving Montana Beta and the rest of the Greek system. It isn't perfect; it never has been and never will be. During the long process it took to get us to this point, we had a lot of encouragement from others and a few doubters who said fraternities and what they represented were dead, so why try to revive them. We have proved that there is still a place in this education system for an institution that fosters friendship, leadership, responsibility, and provides another aspect to the whole learning process that we call college. I maintain that I learned as much about life outside the classroom as I did in the classroom, and SAE was a good part of that. The lifelong friends I gained have been a bonus. For this success to continue, it will take the support of alumni, including involvement in their activities as advisors, financial support for projects that keep 1120 Gerald in good physical shape, and words of encouragement for those who are actively involved in chapter activities. It will take an active chapter that pays attention to what it takes to keep themselves on top through recruiting to a high standard for members and keeping the chapter house in good, clean condition. I would like to mention some of the individuals who were involved in this transition from the ashes, including Jim, John, Scott, Ron Cole '81, Tom Ross '62, Tony Wertz '65, Dave Hafer '64, Ken Lawrence '63, Max Boese, Oregon Gamma '65, Kurt Ingold, Pennsylvania Zeta '67, Bob Haynum '65, and John Galen '78. Thank you for all who have supported us through generous donations of time and treasure. I believe that Montana Beta Chapter has a bright future and, with your continued support, we can help make that happen.
