THE BETA BEAT PAGE 2 Bob Jackson '69 Encourages Alumni to Remember Their Montana Beta Roots W hen reflecting back on certain fraternal experiences, Bob Jackson '69 says, "I recall going skiing up at Snow Bowl and when I returned to my car, it had a flat tire and my spare tire was also flat. There I was stuck up on the mountain. Someone gave me a ride down the mountain back to Missoula. I went to the SAE house and two brothers and I went back up to the top of the mountain after dinner in the freezing cold and changed the flat tire. We finally got back around 11:30 p.m. What a night! That is when my brothers sure came through and it made me proud to be a member of SAE. I am thankful to have been surrounded by individuals who provided me with a lifetime of laughter, fun, and other memorable experiences." Bob was exposed to Sigma Alpha Epsilon's values early on by a distant cousin. He didn't have any intention, however, of joining a fraternity. Bob left college in 1962 to go into the Marines and returned to UM after completing his military obligations. "Going back to college as a veteran gave me a whole new perspective on life and by joining the SAEs helped me to further enjoy campus life. The brothers of Montana Beta were a big influence and inspired me to complete my college education. Joining the chapter was one of the best decisions I made when I returned to college." As an alumnus, Bob has run into Carey Smith '68, Bill Foy '69, Dick Holmquist '67, and Jim Beery '67. He had the opportunity to reunite with brothers at UM's Homecoming a few years ago and attended Montana Beta's 80th anniversary dinner. He encourages alumni to remember their Montana Beta roots and rekindle friendships with brothers they haven't seen in years. "For many of us, Montana Beta provided us with some of our most cherished memories and friendships," Bob says. "Over the years, I've recognized the value to be connected with brothers and keep the fraternal bonds intact. Alumni involvement is a key ingredient to why our chapter continues to thrive. Montana Beta's resurrection can be solely credited to alumni who incorporate the needs of the chapter in their dedicated efforts and thoughtful deeds, and, as a result, the fraternity is where it is today. This made me feel that I should give back to Montana Beta. It is my hope that other alumni will get involved and give back as well. You'll be glad you did." Bob recently retired after an enjoyable and rewarding career in the scrap metal industry. He says, "If I had the opportunity to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing." He and his partner of 30 years, Diane, live in Scottsdale, Arizona, during the winter, and they spend their summer months at Jersey Shore in Margate, New Jersey. Bob is glad to see Montana Beta thriving and is eager for the chapter house renovations to come to completion, and hopes that other alumni will get involved as well.
