May 16, 2012 Kenneth Hardies Kenneth Hardies, age 87, of Quartzsite, Arizona, passed away on May 1, 2012, at Estrella Care Center in Avondale, AZ. He was born February 23, 1925, near Eagan, South Dakota. He grew up on the family farm near Gary, South Dakota and continued farming until the winter of 1947-48 when he attended Coyne Electric School in Chicago. He married Alice Bresser in 1949 and farmed near Canby, Minnesota. The winter of 1974-75 they started coming to Quartz- site. They were snowbirds and vendors at fi rst, sell- ing rough and slab rock. By 1982 they were here most of the year in a semi-permanent building. In 1988 they moved into a permanent building, selling rocks, beads, jewelry and gift items. In 1997 they 'retired', sell- ing the business to Steve and Brenda Hardies. Ken was an avid reader and he loved gardening, growing beautiful roses in Quartzsite, hybrid tomatoes, and cactus. He enjoyed photography and was well known for his unique and beautiful faceted gemstones. Ken is survived by four children, Dave (Loretta) in Nebraska, Steve (Brenda) in Quartzsite, Carol Benson (Doyle) in Nebraska, and Mark (Diane) in Flori- da, eleven grandchildren and many great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Alice, his Sister Eva Anderson, and his parents. A family memorial will be held in Kearney, NE. The family would appreciate contributions be made to the Quartzsite Public Library for large print books. profi t, weight-loss support and well- ness education organization. He was born May 31, 1958 in Kansas City, Missouri. Jeff went through school in Kansas and Missouri, worked in a family piano business (Technician restoring). Also worked at keyboard Movers in California later to due serious injuries to his feet he worked as desk clerk at motels in Kansas City area. He is survived by his mother, Marjorie Houston of Quartzsite, Arizona, three brothers don Houston of Lubbock, Texas, David Houston, Onalaska, Texas, James Houston, Kansas City, Missouri; one sister Anna Maria Steege of Carmel Valley, Calif. And a daughter Cassandra Wilson. He was preceded in death by his father Edwin R "Sam" Houston of Quartzsite, Arizona, two brothers Samuel Houston, Lake Elsinore, Calif., and Zane E. Houston of Kansas City, Missouri. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. Page 19
