MAY 16, 2012 Issue #152 www.DesertMessenger.com "Quartzsite's FREE Community Paper" By Joanne Winer Local bookstore owner and very popular blues musician Paul Winer has been invited to play at the fi rst Blythe River Blues Festival on May 26,2012. The concert will be held at the Quechan Marina, just off the fi rst exit into Blythe by the Agricul- ture station. Take the exit after the Agriculture station and go right and the marina is right there next to the highway. The event is sponsored by the Blythe Chamber of Commerce, and will start at 2 p.m. and run until midnight. Paul Winer (aka Sweet Pie), of Quartzsite, has been playing boogie woogie blues for over 35 years, and has recently renewed his music career after 20 years retirement. He has been playing shows in Quartzsite for the past two years, notably his concerts at the Q.I.A. for the past two Januarys where he had sold out performances (800 seats) each time, and holds the record for the most people at the Q.I.A for the three shows he did there during the season. He also did a benefi t show for the Q.I.A. this past March, and it was very successful also. He plays at Unofficial: Voters elect Ed Foster as mayor Quartzsite, AZ - Tuesday, May 15, 2012. In a hotly contested cam- paign, the unoffi cial results show voters elected former recalled Ed Foster as mayor of Quartzsite. For- mer Councilmember Jerry Lukkas- son received 279 votes (42.27%) to Foster's 376 votes (56.97%). There were 5 write-in votes for .76%. Incumbents Joe Winslow and Barbara Cowell lost their seats to Mark Orgeron and Pat Workman. Orgeron received 372 votes (29.25%) Winslow received 244 votes (19.18%) There were 13 Write-in votes cast after serving for just more than a year. for mayoral position for 1.02% of the votes. Out of the 1514 registered voters, 667 voters took the time to vote with a 44.06% turnout. The results are unoffi cial as of Workman took 364 votes (28.62) Cowell received 279 votes (21.93%) Tuesday night and are not fi nal un- til the provisional/late earlies are counted. The fi nal results should be released in the next few days. Foster was elected as mayor of Quartzsite in May, 2010. He was ousted by voters in a recall in 2011 on the council in 2011 to run for mayor. That seat remains open. Foster is known for speaking out against Town Manager Alex Taft, Quartzsite Chief of Police Jeff Gil- bert, and current council mem- bers. Lukkasson resigned his position in at the next regularly scheduled council meeting on Tuesday, May 22nd at 9:00am at Town Hall. Foster is expected to be sworn 541-218-2560 Paul Winer to play at Blythe River Blues Festival RV parks around town, like Gold Star, Arizona Sun, and JRs, and has also played in Phoenix, Brenda, Blythe and Parker. Winer had recorded an album in 1971, and released a CD of his early music as Sweet Pie (a lost tape from 1971), and has recently released a DVD of his Q.I.A. concert. These items (CD and DVD) will be available at the festival.
