You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope someday you'll join us, and the world will be as one." ~ John Lennon "Imagine all the people living life in peace." What? In Quartzsite? With all the political rhetoric over the past years, it's no wonder people are skeptical of how our community can move forward in peace. In every election, there are those who will feel their guy or gal lost or won. Remember, we choose how we look at a given situation. Our frame of mind dictates how we see the world (and Quartzsite). My mother often said, "There's always a lesson somewhere." www.QuartzsiteVideos.com of the Desert Messenger Email: desertmessenger7@yahoo.com DEADLINE is WED. He lived, thought, acted and inspired by the vision of humanity evolving toward a world of peace and harmony." ~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I know a "world of peace and har- mony" is diffi cult for some to imagine, however, if we can bring it closer to home, just substitute the word "hu- manity" for "Quartzsite". Imagine our community fi nally declaring a truce. Mahatma Gandhi inspired the world with his faith in truth and justice for all Mankind through 5 principles of peace. Imagine how the community of Quartzsite can heal from the political scars using his teachings. Teaching # 1: Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punish- ment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment. — Mahatma Gandhi Gandhi taught the force of power never wins against the power of love We can resolve the greatest of our dif- ferences if we dare to have a construc- tive conversation with our enemy. DESERT May 16, 2012 Teaching # 2: What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad de- struction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty and democracy? A war always infl icts pain and sor- row on everyone. Teaching # 3: There are many causes that I am prepared to die for but no cause that I am prepared to kill for. — Mahatma Gandhi We too can bring peace to our world by showing our willingness to sac- rifi ce our self-centered desires. Our utmost cause in life should be to win the hearts of others by showing our willingness to serve causes greater than ourselves. Teaching # 4: An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind — Mahatma Gandhi History can attest to the fact that most human confl icts have been as a result of a stubborn approach by our leaders. Our history would turn out for the better if our leaders could just learn that most disputes can be resolved by showing a willingness to understand the issues of our oppo- nents and by using diplomacy and compassion. Teaching #5: We must become the change we want to see in the world. — Mahatma Gandhi A great leader always leads with an exemplary life that echoes his ideals. One cannot bring world peace to all unless a leader demonstrates peaceful acts of kindness daily. Mahatma Gan- dhi believed that we are all children of God. We should not discriminate amongst ourselves based on faith, caste, creed or any other differences. I wrote this editorial long before the election results were released, due to constraints of publishing. Whoever "wins", let there be respect, peace and harmony in our community. May we learn the lesssons taught by Mahatma Gandhi and we "will be as one."
