In my last message to you, I noted that the makeup of members living in the Chapter House consisted of mostly sophomores and freshmen. The executive council was heavily weighted by sophomores and with that comes concern about not only maturity and focus, but also the promise of enthusiasm and energy. There is a palpable change in the culture at SigEp and it has been felt and embraced by the freshman class. You can contribute early in your membership and you should. How? As has been recited often, recruiting is the lifeblood of the Fraternity. Vice President of Recruitment Max Kuhn '17 has done a stellar job by signing 12 spring new members, and already has a pipeline of more than 60 high potential candidates for the fall with more being added weekly. He has had assistance finding and communicating with these candidates from sophomore and freshman members who are invested in making the Chapter stronger. Not only is this helping SigEp get a huge jumpstart on finding the best talent, it will help us be highly selective by offering membership to only the best of the best. In addition, 40 percent of the spring class comes from outside the Kansas City area, meeting our ongoing goal of diversity. Our new Chapter president is Carson Lilley '17, which is the first time I can remember a sophomore being elected. He's enthusiastic and focused on correcting missteps in the past while being open-minded to suggestions on how to improve the Chapter. He has a great mentor in former Chapter President Tyler Struckoff '15, who as a fifth-year senior, has chosen to live in the house through May. The alumni board is committed to helping Carson and the rest of the young, driven executive council demonstrate leadership in the manner to which they aspire. It's an exciting time for our Chapter. Lucas Renz '17 demonstrates remarkable campus leadership and was elected as director of judicial affairs on the Interfraternity Council (IFC). In this role, Lucas works closely with the head of IFC and holds an influential position in the Greek system. The head of K-State's Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, Ben Hopper, has commented to me on how far we've come in the last year and how pleased he is with our current direction and leadership. The AVC agrees, but we of course are here to help foster even further growth. In this issue, you'll read about many exciting developments, including our new website—be sure to check it out. Thank you to Luke Henes '18 for owning this project and making it happen. Our intent is to continually add new content so you'll have a reason to stay connected. To read stories about our Kansas Beta legacies, turn to page 2. For any of you who have been, or may be part of a family of SigEps, it is special. Trust me, I feel this personally and it is one of the reasons I choose to volunteer. Be on the lookout for continued updates as we approach Kansas Beta's centennial anniversary in February 2018. If you haven't been back to Manhattan or the Chapter House for a while, this will be the time to do so. Enjoy this issue of The Hoop of Steel and, as always, any feedback is welcome. Prior to its revision, the website failed to provide alumni, parents, active members, and prospective members with rich, updated content. Luke viewed this lack of proper communication as an opportunity to create positive change for Kansas Beta and took the initiative to reconstruct the website. Our revamped website is a significant upgrade from the previous version, but Luke's improvements haven't stopped there. He will be adding more content to the website, including features that will allow alumni, parents, and undergraduate members the opportunity to donate to Kansas Beta's scholarship fund, house improvements, philanthropy, and other projects. Kansas Beta's online presence is one of many ways our Chapter will make a strong case for its ninth Buchanan Cup in 2017. Digital copies of The Hoop of Steel will be available on our website in the weeks to come.
