ALUMNUS HONORED FOR HIS SUCCESSFUL CAREER W. Scott McAdam '79 Receives 2016 ACES Award of Merit T he members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon have a long standing tradition of distinguishing themselves as leaders in their communities. They dedicate them- selves to serving others and demonstrate the values of a True Gentleman. Many of our loyal alumni continue to give back to the university and fraternity after gradu- ation to foster the education and well-being of other young people today. This year, W. Scott McAdam '79 is being honored with the ACES Award of Merit from the College ACES Alumni Association in recognition of his contributions to his community and his extremely successful career. "I was quite stunned and humbled to receive this hon- or," shares Scott. "My whole life I have been involved in not for profit organizations because I believed that it is important and necessary to give back to your community and to the world. I have served on many boards and received several honors, but this one holds a special place in my heart." He has worked with the university in several different capacities and is grateful to them for providing him with the tools to succeed in his career. Much of who he is today is also due in part to his membership in ΣAΕ. "My experience with the fraternity helped me grow as a person and reinforced the importance of honesty, integrity, and commitment." During his undergraduate years, Scott developed relationships with his brothers that have lasted to this day. "Despite our many differences, we are indeed a family; a family of brothers from varied and diverse backgrounds that are able to live together with a com- mon purpose." Despite the chapter enduring many challenges through- out the years, Scott believes in the mission of Illinois Beta and the experiences there. "I just hope that the bond that we all felt in the '70s is still being felt by the current brothers." He encourages the undergraduates to dedicate themselves to going all in. "I really believe that what you get out of an experience is directly related to how much effort you put into the experience." Scott also suggests that as they progress through their college ca- reers, that brothers keep in mind the words of Charles Swindoll: "I believe that life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it, and so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes." Scott and his wife, Veronika, live in Lemont, Ill., and have two chil- dren: Amanda and Scott Jr. He is the president and registered land- scape architect for McAdam Landscaping, a company he and his brother, Robert C. McAdam Jr. '77, started in 1979. He enjoys keeping in touch with his ΣAE brothers and hopes for more oppor- tunities to attend Illinois Beta alumni events in the future.
