Stevenson Jr. '60 Presented with Honorary I Award T his past fall, the University of Illinois recognized John A. Stevenson Jr. '60 for his longstanding loyalty and support of the athletic department and constant dedication to the university. During Homecoming 2015, he was presented with the Honorary I award and recognized during the game. "It is one of the top awards the university gives and I am immensely proud to receive it." When John first pledged Illinois Beta, he had no idea the fraternity would have such a profound impact on his life. "I would have been a totally different person without my experience as a ΣAE. I owe a great deal to the fraternity." During his time in the chapter, John served as eminent archon for three semesters and as the chapter's representative to Interfraternity Council for two years. He played on the Illini varsity baseball and basketball teams, was elected to the first all-fraternity basketball team his junior and senior years, and was awarded Top Fraternity Man of the Year. "The fraternity had an enormous impact on shaping the person I am today. My experience as EA taught me crucial business lessons that I have used throughout my career with AT&T. I also learned invalu- able lessons in how to build posi- tive, meaningful relationships." He cherishes the opportunities ΣAE afforded him and the friendships that have lasted to this day. "Broth- erhood has deep meaning. I have never experienced it in any other thing I have participated in, including sports teams." One of John's proudest ΣΑΕ memories was when his son, Scott '90, was initiated into Illinois Beta Chapter. "I surprised him at the initiation ceremony and pinned him myself." John has been a dedicated alumnus of both ΣAE and the university since his graduation in 1960. He has been an example of what it means to be a True Gentleman through his service to his community and extremely successful career with AT&T and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois. John remains grateful for his ΣAE experiences. "One of the best decisions I ever made was to pledge ΣAE—a decision that made my life infinitely more meaningful." He lives in Champaign, Ill., and works as a senior consultant at NCSA. You can connect with him at johns@ncsa.uiuc.edu.
