THE ORACLE A L P H A - O M I C R O N Z E TA O F L A M B D A C H I A L P H A AT I N D I A N A U N I V E R S I T Y / S P R I N G 2 0 1 6 Alpha-Omicron Remains Strong Chapter House and Greek Life Changes at IU I t has been a busy year for Alpha-Omicron as we finally wrap up more than $450,000 worth of construction projects over the past three years. The growing pains of getting our chapter house up to date, as well as supporting an undergraduate membership of over 160 brothers, have been something to celebrate. SETTING AN EXAMPLE FOR IU GREEK LIFE I am excited to see the improvements, not only in the house, but in our members and how they have worked to raise our level of repre- sentation on campus. Our members now have a broad membership across campus organiza- tions, including having two members on In- terfraternity Council, representing 25% of the council membership. The Greek community at IU has suffered through a lot of turmoil over the past year as we find several chapters expelled from campus and a university that is putting more scrutiny over Greek and non-Greek life. Although this puts all Greek chapters in a bad light, we welcome that scrutiny as our Lambda Chi core values are a solid footing for a strong brotherhood. A NEW IFC VISION I was asked back in the spring of 2015 to represent all Interfraternity Council alumni in writing a new vision for Greek life on campus. Along with 30 IU employees, the vision statement was released last fall. We will post this document on our website, as it is a rather encompassing. After we hammer out the details, it will mean many changes to Greek life. It could mean we have a permanent live-in house director, which would require us to build an apartment for that person within our present chapter house. Stay tuned as we position ourselves to meet these new challenges! 100TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION We are very proud to talk about our 100-year anniversary coming up in April 2017. We have put together a committee of house corporation and undergraduate members at the chapter to put on a big celebration for our alumni (see the full listing on page 4). Our undergraduate members will be leading the charge for this celebration and we should have details out to everyone soon, which will include a block of hotel rooms for those traveling. GRATEFUL FOR OUR ALUMNI Thank you to all our alumni who donated to the improvements at AO! It was great to see the turnout for Homecoming 2015 and to get the chance to thank those in person who make our brotherhood a lasting tradition. We also dedicated the Pete Baker '79 Bike Room this past fall. As a reminder, Little 500 is April 16 and judging by the effort I have seen from our bike team, we should find a strong showing this year! In ZAX, Tony Drake '84 House Corporation President (630) 336-8973 tdrake1219@gmail.com ALWAYS SERVING THE BROTHERHOOD Pete Baker '79 Honored by Alpha-Omicron J oining a fraternity means more than a full social calendar; it means becoming part of something larger than oneself. Fraternities provide leadership opportunities, chances to better the community, and an indescribable sense of belonging. Pete Baker '79 found all of these qualities in Alpha-Omicron Chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha. Since his initiation in 1975, Pete has been a steadfast supporter of the chapter, leaving a lasting legacy at Alpha-Omicron. Pete has always been a leader within Lambda Chi, beginning in his undergraduate years. He served as recruitment chairman and intramural chairman. The brotherly support Pete found in the chapter inspired and pushed him to not only better the fraternity, but to be the best version of himself. "The fraternity provided me life lessons from guys who were older and willing to share their experiences to the benefit of younger brothers," Pete said. In terms of awards Lambda Chi Alpha bestows on alumni, the Order of Merit is one of the greatest. It is only given to brothers who exhibit "unusual, lengthy, and dedicated service particularly at the local chapter level." Pete is a recipient of this prestigious award for his service to Alpha- Omicron and his 26 years on the house corporation board in the positions of secretary, vice president, and president. "It remains one of the highest honors of my life," Pete said. This year, Pete was recognized by Alpha-Omicron for his years as a dedicated alumnus with the newly built bike (Continued on page 2)
