By the time you read this, the undergraduates will have completed another amazing house decoration and made new friends and memories as part of Freshmen Follies. We're also blessed this year to have a large, possibly record number of legacies in the chapter, and their enthusiasm and the support of their fathers has been great. The highlight of this semester was our fraternity's biennial Grand Chapter Conclave. This year's Conclave took place in Nashville with 12 OK Alpha undergraduates, Todd Donavan '86, and I in attendance. If you've never had the opportunity to attend a Conclave, they're an incredible experience for every SigEp. Jim Blazer '67 and Jim McKellar '67 Awarded the Order of Philias First off, seeing the dedication and brotherly love exhibited by the volunteers from across the country is truly inspiring. This year's outstanding volunteer groups showed the incredibly positive influence that fraternities can have in the lives of our brothers and our communities. These acts reminded me of two brothers from Oklahoma Alpha. The Order of Philias, the award given each Conclave for outstanding acts of brotherly love, was given to Jim Blazer '67 and Jim McKellar '67 for their care and compassion to Ray Murphy '68. The Ray Murphy Fund, which the two co-founded and which the undergraduates have raised funds for at home footballs games for many years, finally raised enough money to be fully endowed this past year. Conclave is an excellent opportunity to be encouraged by and recognize outstanding work such as this. Engaged Alumni Key to Chapter Success My second reason that I recommend Conclave is that it is a reminder of our own lifetime responsibility of brotherhood and of the incredible, positive benefits that having an active and engaged alumni base can provide an undergraduate chapter. It's well known that strong undergraduate chapters only stay strong with consistent and dedicated alumni support. Just as I had the benefit of having Shane Crawford '99 as chapter counselor when I was an undergraduate, I hope to provide that same leadership to the current undergraduates as well as work to build a bridge between undergraduates and alumni that has been in disrepair for a very long time. Improving Alumni-Undergraduate Communication We all know that the relations and communication between alumni and the undergraduates has been strained and inconsistent. Whether caused by chapter closings, poor undergraduate effort, or other issues, we're working to begin an alumni relations program that will be both substantial and sustainable. This program will go well beyond the housing campaign and provide consistent opportunities for alumni and undergraduates to share stories and advice, build connections, and have fun. Trevor Davenport '14, a recent alumnus, and Mike Reddout '85, a not-so-recent alumnus, have volunteered to help the undergraduates with this effort and their support is deeply appreciated. Alumni, Get Involved with OK Alpha As a fellow brother, I want you all to know that you can reach me at any time if you have questions about the undergraduate chapter or suggestions for better ways to build alumni- undergraduate relations. I'm looking forward to assisting the undergraduates as they continue their success across multiple fronts. They are an incredible group of young men and I look forward to you all getting the opportunity to meet them and discover that for yourselves and see that the future of the Oklahoma Alpha Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon is bright.
