All for One and One for All Ken Love '62 Reflects on ΣΑΕ W hen Ken Love '62 came to the Illini campus, he was shy and was looking for a place to call home. The campus was overwhelming with more than 25,000 students. "I was looking for friends, for support, and an element of security. I found that in ΣΑΕ." His best memories from his undergraduate years are times that he spent with his ΣΑΕ brothers. "My closest buddies and I would meet at Bidwells every Friday afternoon to chat and hang out with other Greek friends. I wish I could just snap my fingers and end up back there again." Despite coming into the fraternity as a shy and quiet individual, Ken soon came into his own through his role as social chairman. "The role was very rewarding. I was able to bring an element of fun and enjoyment to the chapter." He still recalls organizing the first Illinois Beta Paddy Murphy Day dance. Ken and several of his brothers took a road trip up to Northwestern University and the ΣΑΕs there provided a wealth of suggestions for the event. As Ken went through his undergraduate years, he learned many lessons from his brothers. "I learned the importance of cooperation and compromise when you have such a wide cross section of individuals living together. I also learned how important a good sense of humor was." These skills helped him to set himself apart in the professional world and he encourages young ΣΑΕs to do the same. "Never do what is just expected; always deliver above and beyond the expectation. In that way, you become not just valuable, but invaluable, and likely irreplaceable." Ken still feels the relevance of his ΣΑΕ experience today. "I still feel fraternities and sororities can play an important role on campus. There is improvement to be made, but I think ΣΑΕ is making a valiant effort at becoming more relevant. I've contributed to my chapter because I know it's worth the investment." Ken and his wife, Diane, split their time between their residences in Lincolnville, Maine, and Naples, Florida. "I met my wife through my association with ΣΑΕ and we've been married 54 years. She is still my sweetheart of ΣΑΕ and she always will be." He keeps in contact with several of his pledge brothers today, including Ed Sestak '62, whom he has known since kindergarten, Ken Harrigan '62, Tom Newton '62, Chuck Sprowl '62, and Norm Dupon '62. "To me, the brotherhood was all for one and one for all."
