Front row, from left: Gary Lee '99, Mike Garceau '99, Matt Olive '99, Kevin Bainbridge '99, and Zeff Asner '99. Back row, from left: Mike Mabry '99, Dave Wong '99, and Rafael Guzman '99. A s a new school year gets underway at UIUC and 211 E. Daniel, the active brothers resume their studies and take on the challenges of being members of a collegiate fraternity in the 21st century. Academics and brotherhood, along with expanded community involvement and a more valued stewardship of the aging chapter house, will be the priorities of the executive board and the membership in general. The chapter still has the remainder of the 2015-16 academic calendar on probationary status with the University. Since coming off suspension in early 2015, the chapter has been aware of the need to project a better image and to work harder at being a positive contributor to the campus community. Reflecting on Chapter History On October 1, 2015, I will end my third term as chapter advisor for Illinois Beta. I have filled this roll in three different eras of the chapter's history. The initial term, 1985-89, ended when we closed 211 for desperately-needed safety upgrades and renovations. My second tenure, 1998-2004, was a time of financial challenges ending with the closing of the chapter and the house. This present term began when the chapter returned to campus as a colony in 2008. I suppose the best assessment one can make from that recap is that this time we're not closing the house again. The chapter is alive, although there are challenges aplenty for the active members. Alumni Involvement Crucial to Chapter Success Our chapter has nearly 150 brothers on its roster. Of that number, not even 40 will be living in the chapter house this fall. That inequity is the most consistent threat to the future of the chapter. Because many UIUC students opt for apartment living or overseas study by their junior year, sophomores make up the population of the house and fill critical leadership roles. Most juniors and seniors are not involved with the chapter in an effective way. That is why alumni involvement is so critical to the longevity of the chapter. I invite and encourage the active brothers I worked with during my first two terms as chapter advisor to consider joining the alumni group in Chicago, or if you're in the Champaign-Urbana area, to visit the chapter and see how you can be involved. Visit 211 E. Daniel Today! I plan to stay involved with the alumni advisory board in the coming months and years. Elizabeth and I are not leaving the area, so I'll always be around for PAGO and Homecoming, and I hope we'll see you then. It's always exciting and fun to see and hear from alumni. That's one of the main reasons I have hung in for so long. Now I hope to see the Sons of Minerva sending their own sons to 211. Phi Alpha!
