FALL 2015 The Squirrel's Nest P S I C H A P T E R O F A L P H A G A M M A D E L T A A T T H E U N I V E R S I T Y O F A L A B A M A Greek Membership Continues to Rise at Alabama Alpha Gam Welcomes 132 New Members to Psi Chapter W hen we thought recruitment couldn't get any bigger, we were so wrong! Although national demographics show a decline in the population for freshmen entering college, the University of Alabama continues to grow with recruiters in nearly every state in the country. At the beginning of the week, 2,460 young ladies were registered for recruitment. Of those, 2,261 were extended bids at the end of the week. Seventy-five percent of the potential new members were from out-of-state, which is unbelievable for those of us who remember the days of dropping all out-of-state girls after ice water teas. Divide that 2,261 women who received bids by the 16 participating Panhellenic sororities, and you'll find that meant quota was 130—a staggering number for each house to pledge. Alpha Gam welcomed 132 new members, and of those, 80 were from in-state, 50 from out-of-state, and one from Sweden. Our incredible success in recruitment this year doesn't just happen. The preparations for the week go on all year long with extensive planning, product ordering, and software training. We are so advanced that our members vote on their cell phones after each party. The sheer volume of recommendations to be gathered and graded is overwhelming and there are so many people giving of their time to pull it all together. Our newly named chapter advisor, Lissa Handley Tyson '83, has been involved every step of the way. Cat Autry '12 from Montgomery served as our recruitment chairman this year. Fay Smith Poole '77 and Susan Burch Waltman '83 worked tirelessly to grade and process recommendations as well as organize alumnae volunteers: Anne Killingsworth Jones '83, Stephanie Seawell (Delta Delta Delta), Elizabeth Loftin Michael '83, Morgan Askins '83, Susan Driggers '75, Donna Lanter Cowan '79, Lou Lou Mize Tucker '82, and Casey Rogers '10. Elizabeth Smith Melancon '02 served as the recruitment advisor and six ladies from Alpha Gamma Delta IHQ were on hand to help. Congratulations and thank-you to our undergraduates and all the ladies who helped make this an incredibly happy day for all involved!
