Between losing a well-known resident to an apparent suicide and the emotions that follow; to return- ing from the League of Arizona Cit- ies & Towns Conference exhausted; to an elder being found in the desert; to celebrating the release of the new Quartzsite Visitor Guide; and count- less 2-hour long meetings. It's been a rocking-rolling emotional week. But then I see what's so amazing about this community - the amount of volunteers we have who step up to help others in need. Months ago, the Health & Development Board decided they want to celebrate our year-round volunteers. They opened up nomina- tions to the community and 32 people were nominated. During their meet- ings, it was apparent how excited they were to have so many of our citizens By Shanana "Rain" BearCat nominated. It's been a pleasure work- ing with the board members to help accomplish their goals in a good way for this community. While attending all those meetings this week, I also had the pleasure of witnessing people working together for the betterment of this commu- nity. Sometimes our emotions can get the best of us, but when our fo- cus in on helping others, somehow things get done. The blessings vol- unteers receive while volunteering is beyond what words can explain. When researchers at the London School of Economics examined the relationship between volunteering and measures of happiness, they found the more people volunteered, the happier they were. So be sure to come on Labor Day at the Park to celebrate all the happy volunteers we have- fun starts at 4pm! Provided by Elmer London, Quartzsite and Desert Messenger Research has shown that people who volunteer often live longer. ~ Allen Klein DEADLINE : WED. So by modern means, I Google all the great old songs on my I-pad. And listen on a small wireless stereo speaker. Is that not mixing the past with the present?
