SoniaNazarioistheauthorof"Enrique'sJourney." Students at the Tehama County Juvenile Justice Center received a rare re- ward for completing a read- ing assignment recently — a live webinar with the au- thor. Sonia Nazario, winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for feature writing and author of "Enrique's Journey, in- teracted with four schools throughout the country via live-stream webinar on Friday, March 27. Students submitted questions via email prior to the event and were able to type in ques- tions during. Enrique's Journey is the story of a young Honduran boy traveling across Mex- ico into the US to find his mother. His travails are numer- ous, and Nazario meticu- lously describes them, hav- ing reenacted parts of his journey herself to under- stand the reality. The story was originally published as a series in the Los Angeles Times and was developed into a book by Random House. A young adult adaptation, which is what the students read, was published in 2013. The Tehama County Ju- venile Justice Center is operated by the Tehama County Probation De- partment, with students enrolled in school year- round through the Tehama County Department of Ed- ucation. A classroom set of En- rique's Journey was donated by the Tehama County Arts Council and is available to other schools to borrow. StudentsconnectwithwinnerofPulitzerPrize EDUCATION As of March 24, the US Department of Veterans Affairs requires veterans and survivors to use stan- dardized forms when fil- ing their claims and ap- peals. The standardized forms enable claimants to clearly identify the symptoms or conditions for which they are seeking benefits, while helping to ensure VA re- ceives the information needed to process their claims. These forms are designed to capture the specific information VA needs to process compen- sation, pension, and other benefit claims. Those who filed their claim prior to March 24 do not need to re-file. Veterans and survivors who need additional time to gather the information needed to support their claims may use the op- tional intent to file process. Submission of the new form, Intent to File a Claim for Compensation or Pension, or Survivors Pension or DIC, protects the claimant's effective date while allowing the claimant up to 1 year to collect supporting infor- mation and submit the appropriate application form. Veterans wishing to ini- tiate appeal of a VA dis- ability compensation de- cision issued after March 24 are now required to express their disagree- ment through submission of the VA form, Notice of Disagreement. Veter- ans and their representa- tives previously used the form on an optional ba- sis. Veterans and survi- vors are not required to use a standardized notice of disagreement form for pension or survivors ben- efits at this time. There are many state and federal benefits and programs available to vet- erans and their depen- dents. To find out if you are eligible for any of these benefits, call the Tehama County Veterans Service Office at 529-3664. The VSO office is by appoint- ment only. Launched this week by the National Park Ser- vice and the National Park Foundation, Find Your Park is a public awareness and education campaign celebrating the milestone centennial anniversary of the National Park Service in 2016 and setting the stage for its second cen- tury of service. Find Your Park invites the public to see that a na- tional park can be more than a place - it can be a feeling, a state of mind, or a sense of American pride. Find Your Park is also the theme for this year's National Park Week, April 18-26. There will be free entrance to all national park areas during the opening weekend of Na- tional Park Week on April 18-19. Lassen Volcanic Na- tional Park rangers will help celebrate National Park Week and share about the park at Red- ding's Turtle Bay Explor- atorium's Earth Day Cel- ebration on April 22, the Red Bluff Children's Fair and Redding's Watershed Festival on April 25. As spring comes early this year to Lassen Volca- nic National Park, visitors can walk or bike along the park highway to ar- eas with snow beyond the closed gates. The park's road crew began clear- ing the park highway from the southwest en- trance on March 31 and will open the highway for vehicles to Sulphur Works on Saturday, April 4. Even though snow depths are low or non-existent on sections of the highway, there have been numer- ous wind-blown trees and fallen rocks that need to be cleared during the next few weeks. Lassen Volcanic Na- tional Park plans to hold the annual Vehicle Free Day just prior to open- ing the highway to ve- hicles which will be an- nounced when we de- termine the date road clearing operations can be completed. The Kohm Yah-mah- nee Visitor Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For weather conditions or gen- eral information, call the park at 595-4480 or send an email to lavo_informa- tion@nps.gov.
