AfewdaysagoIfol- lowed a link to a video of the Ferguson, Missouri, unrest. I watched ri- oters break through a store wall before loot- ing it. Most of the loot- ers grab- bing what- ever they wanted were white. This is not about race. People on one side of the Ferguson divide say black people just want entitle- ments and will stop at nothing to get them — imagining that is not rac- ist. People on the other side say black people suf- fered for centuries un- der white domination and what goes around comes around — and imagining it not racist to label them incapable of rising above circumstances when so many do. This is not about race — and never was. It is about law abiding de- cent people versus law de- fying indecent people of all tribes. It is about being part of the solution or part of the problem — seeking authentic reconciliation, or being so smug in our prej- udices we despise conver- sation. As a cadet teacher forty years ago I taught in an inner-city school. A black student came on with at- titude from our first en- counter and it seemed to me every exchange was a bomb waiting to explode. After about two weeks of (in my mind) great ef- fort to approach him with courtesy and respect while maintaining my author- ity I asked him to remain after class. "You tellin' me I can't go home?" he growled. "No. I am telling you I want to talk to you." We sat down and I asked him to tell me what it was about me that so ticked him off. He admitted that his fifth grade teacher was openly racist and con- stantly demeaning him. He said he decided then to shoot first and ask ques- tions later with any white teachers he had. He added that he was not sorry for this. I asked him to look at me carefully, which he did. I asked him if I in any way resembled the teacher who had earned his ha- tred. He said I did not. "Then suppose you and I start all over again — to- day — and look at each other as who we are. If you see me putting you down when you've done no wrong, push back; if not, give me a break and I'll do the same for you. You re- member I am the teacher and I'll remember you de- serve my respect." We got along famously after that. But we had to have a frank conversation. Let's be clear about two things. One is that we have come a long way on race in the past half century. A black man in the White House is the most potent symbol of that progress. That the civil rights leg- islation so passionately fought for in the 20th Cen- tury is so rarely invoked today is another such sym- bol; we Americans have learned to honor one an- other — like the black man who taught twenty-year- old me to survive in the streets. The richest expres- sion of this general har- mony is the flourishing of ministries dedicated to reconciliation such as PrayNorthState; I travel the world honoring and being honored by people of all colors and ethnicity. They have my back and I have theirs. This camara- derie is common over mil- lions of back fences. Another is that there is still racism in Amer- ica. It is as ugly as it ever was, and most of it comes from the rich and power- ful inside and outside gov- ernment. The Crow Peo- ple and their Montana res- ervation sit atop untold reserves of oil, gas and mineral wealth; the fed- eral government blocks their every effort to tap it — they are, after all, Indi- ans while the environmen- talists who have the ear of government are white. Alaska natives passion- ately desire the prosperity that would be theirs if the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge opened for drill- ing. The same white pro- gressive environmental- ists in bed with govern- ment are putting a quarter billion acres of Native land off limits to protect the ring seal. Hollywood — white progressive Holly- wood — snubs an achieve- ment like the film "Selma" for academy award consid- eration. There is racism in America but it is not com- ing from middle class tra- ditional values types. The bottom line is that whenever we take the time and display the courage to have a frank discussion with each other it usually works just fine. Authen- tic reconciliation is about speaking the truth — with passion — as we under- stand it. It is about listen- ing to the truth as oth- ers understand it with re- spect. It is finally about God re-framing the con- versation. Our function is humbly granting Him per- mission; that permission carries life-giving promise. And it is not about race; it is about right and wrong. BETHEL ASSEMBLY Founder of Dream Center to speak TommyBarnett The Associated Press VATICAN CITY Pope Fran- cis on Sunday will declare a little-known 10th-century Armenian mystic a doctor of the church, one of the highest honors a pope can bestow. More attention, though, is likely to be on whether Francis utters the word "genocide" during his homily. Francis is marking the 100th anniversary of the killing of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire by cele- brating a Mass in the Ar- menian Catholic rite in St. Peter's Basilica. The Arme- nian patriarch, Nerses Bed- ros XIX Tarmouni, will con- celebrate and the Mass will be attended by Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan. It's a big deal for the Ar- menians, who in the run-up to the centenary have been campaigning for greater recognition that the slaugh- ter constituted genocide. It's also a big deal for Tur- key, which has long denied that the deaths constituted genocide, insisted that the toll has been inflated, and that those killed were vic- tims of civil war and unrest. Francis avoided the word on Thursday when he met the visiting Arme- nian church delegation, but said that what transpired 100 years ago involved men "who were capable of sys- tematically planning the annihilation of their broth- ers." "Let us invoke divine mercy so that for the love of truth and justice, we can heal every wound and bring about concrete gestures of peace and reconciliation be- tween two nations that are still unable to come to a rea- sonable consensus on this sad event," he said. Historians estimate that up to 1.5 million Arme- nians were killed by Otto- man Turks around the time of World War I, an event widely viewed by genocide scholars as the first geno- cide of the 20th century. Several European countries recognize the massacres as such, though Italy and the United States, for exam- ple, have avoided using the term officially given the im- portance they place on Tur- key as an ally. According to reports in the Turkish media, Turkey has been working behind the scenes to discourage Francis from uttering the term "genocide" and re- portedly successfully cam- paigned to prevent the pa- pal Mass from being cele- brated on April 24, which is considered the actual an- niversary of the start of the slaughter. Last year, Turkish Presi- dent Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a message of condo- lences to descendants of Armenians killed and said Turkey was ready to con- front the history of the kill- ings. More recently, Er- dogan has accused Arme- nians of not looking for the truth but seeking to score points against Turkey, say- ing numerous calls from Turkey for joint research to document precisely what happened had gone unan- swered. The Armenians have found a willing supporter in Francis, who as Car- dinal Jorge Mario Bergo- glio was particularly close to the Armenian commu- nity in Argentina and re- ferred to the "genocide" of Armenians three times in his 2010 book, "On Heaven and Earth." As pope, Francis pro- voked Turkish anxiety — and a minor diplomatic in- cident — when in June 2013 he told a delegation of Ar- menian Christians that the killing was "the first geno- cide of the 20th century." The Vatican spokesman subsequently said the re- marks were in no way a formal or public declara- tion and therefore didn't constitute a public asser- tion by the pope that geno- cide took place. But St. John Paul II re- ferred to the "genocide" both before and during his 2001 trip to Armenia, even signing an official docu- ment with the Armenian church leader Catholicos Karekin II noting that that the episode "is generally re- ferred to as the first geno- cide of the 20th century." Francis highlighted Tur- key's important role as a bridge between faiths dur- ing his November visit to the country, and made no reference at all to the Ar- menian issue — though he did add a last-minute visit to the ailing Armenian pa- triarch of Constantinople.
