FTCC's Sigma Kappa Delta Opens the Mic and Runs to Freeze Out Hunger Shane Wilson, FTCC Professor of English Saadia Crosby was nervous. She had never shared her original poetry with anyone. She was not even sure what she was thinking—signing up at this open mic night to read to a bunch of strangers. The host called her name, and soon she could hear her words spilling out of her mouth, caught by the nearby microphone, projected to the students and teachers seated near the foot of the stage. FTCC's Rho Beta Chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta (SKD), The National English Honor Society for Two-Year Colleges, has launched Off the Record, a monthly open mic series on the FTCC campus. The event is open to FTCC students, faculty, and staff who wish to perform poetry or music. The casual, friendly format is hosted each month by an FTCC student. The first event, held in February, saw a great gath- ering of students and faculty members. The event included original and improvised poetry, a ukulele act, a cappella vocals, and a pianist. "I had heard about this event in class earlier this week," Saadia says. "I've never read anything I've written out loud. It felt good, though. Everyone was super supportive." Future events will continue to feature student performance art and host featured artists from the Fayetteville com- munity. The next Off the Record performance for the remainder of the semester will be held April 21 at 5 PM in the Cumberland Hall auditorium and is open to the public. FTCC has no shortage of extracurricular opportunities for students. In fact, for a commuter campus, the student participation in on-campus events is impressive. When I was asked to step into the faculty advisor role for the FTCC Rho Beta chapter, I was not sure what kind of participation I would see. Not only was I astounded by the num- ber of students who joined this organization, I have also been steadily impressed by the students who want the organization to be a significant and positive presence on FTCC's campus and in the Fayetteville community. SKD has certainly been busy these last few months. The 2014 fall semester saw the rebirth of the organization's literary journal, Unbound, which publishes the creative writing and art of the FTCC community. The journal was unveiled in October 2014 at a Fourth Friday release party at The Capitol Room in downtown Fayetteville. SKD is currently accepting submissions for the next issue of Unbound, scheduled to be released in October 2015. Additionally, SKD hosted the first ever Freeze Out Hunger 5K on Saturday, January 17, 2015. The event featured a food drive that benefit- ted the Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina. The 5K course wound through FTCC's campus, and in spite of chilly weather, the event drew over 70 participants to the college and raised over 400 pounds of food for Second Harvest.
