2 THE ORACLE "I joined Lambda Chi Alpha after meeting the men in the house. And one line in particular struck me. Joel Trusty '84, another freshman (but already an associate) said, 'I'm not telling you we are the best or the worst on campus. But I'm telling you that we are on the rise, and the younger guys in this house are going to take LCA to the next level if you want to be a part of that.' "Frankly, there were chapters with better reputations that I considered joining, but none of them had better guys. Thirty-five years after first becoming an associate member, I can say without hesitation that my closest friends in the world are brothers from Lambda Chi Alpha. They are brothers in every sense of the word, except blood. That is what Alpha-Omicron means to me. "I earned a double degree in journalism and political science in 1984. I am a vice president for Bellum Entertainment, selling syndicated television shows to television stations all over the country. Before joining Bellum Entertainment in January 2014, I was with NBC Universal for 24 years also selling TV shows. I could have easily taken the safe route, stayed and retired from NBC Universal. But the challenge of going from a major studio to a small independent Hollywood studio on the rise was too compelling to resist. At Bellum I am getting to do things and build relationships with clients that I never would have been able to do at NBC. Simply put, I went from being a small fish in a very big pond at NBCU to being a big fish in a small pond at Bellum Entertainment. I have learned so much in a short time and more importantly, revitalized my passion for this business that I have been fortunate to be a part of for 25 years. "Lambda Chi had a big influence on my career path. By holding many offices during my time in the house, I learned how to speak to a large group and convince them to support my ideas and strategies for the betterment of the house. I also gained leadership experience, responsibility, and how to better work as team and deal with people from different walks of life, often with different ideas. "Being a part of Alpha-Omicron was one of the greatest experiences of my life and it keeps on giving. That's what motivated me to support Lambda Chi. If I can help pass that experience on to the next generation, I am all for it. My financial contribution helps the bricks and mortar aspect, so to speak. But my personal influence hopefully gives the undergraduates a sense of the real world and some practical advice. Kel Preston '82 has set up a gathering every Homecoming in which undergraduates meet with alumni in a 'speed dating' environment. Alumni are seated at tables and the undergraduates get five minutes with each one to ask any questions and seek advice. We do our best to follow up with the members any way possible. "For alumni who aren't involved in Alpha- Omicron, I would tell them to remember what the chapter meant to them and when someone took the time to help them get started in their careers. We are only on this planet for a short time; why not try to help someone else if given the opportunity? It's never too late to come back. Stop missing out on a connection from your past, present, and future. They men from my era have a saying: Everything I needed to succeed in life I learned at 1210 East Third Street!" Michael and his wife, Melissa, have been married for 21 years and live in Marietta, Georgia. They have one daughter, Leighton, who is a freshman in high school and plays club volleyball. In his spare time, Michael enjoys spending time with his family, attending Leighton's volleyball tournaments, golfing, working out, and traveling. He also likes to stay in touch with his brothers from Lambda Chi. At least 15 to 20 from his era make a point to reunite every Homecoming, an impressive showing after 30 years.
