Tuesday, October 18, 2011 – Daily News 5A Survey shows some teens may have social phobia WASHINGTON (AP) — Does your teen show normal nerves about the weekend party, or always stay home? Nearly half of teenagers say they're shy, perhaps a bit surprising in our say-anything society. But a government study finds a small fraction of those teens show signs of a troubling anxiety disor- der that can be mistaken for extreme shyness. The report challenges criticism that the terms ''social phobia'' or ''social anxiety disorder'' medicalize normal shy- ness. ''Shyness is a normal human temperament,'' says lead researcher Dr. Kathleen Merikangas of the National Institute of Mental Health, whose teachers always noted her own childhood shyness on her report cards. But just as it can be hard to tell when feeling sad turns into depression, ''there is a blurred bound- ary between people who describe themselves as shy and clinically signifi- cant impairment,'' Merikangas adds. Study: More false alarms with annual mammograms A new study supports getting mammograms every other year instead of annually. It finds that more than 60 percent of women who get tested each year for a decade will be called back at least once for extra tests that turn out not to show breast cancer. Screening every other year, as a government task force recommends, drops this false alarm rate to 42 percent without a big risk WORLD BRIEFING Executive material. ''Sesame Street'' Producer of cancer being found at a late stage, the study sug- gests. Having your previ- ous mammogram avail- able for comparison to the new one cuts the chance of a false alarm in half. The study appears in the Annals of Internal Medicine. It does not get into the debate over whether mammograms should start at age 40 or 50. Life-at- fertilization initiative has hope in Miss. JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A national effort to put abortion bans into state con- stitutions is looking for its first victory next month in Mississippi, where voters are being asked to approve an amendment declaring that life begins when a human egg is fertilized. Supporters hope the so- called personhood initiative will succeed in a Bible Belt state that already has some of the nation's toughest abortion regulations and only a single clinic where the procedures are per- formed. The initiative is endorsed by both candidates in a gov- ernor's race that's being decided the same day. While Mississippi is the only state with such an amendment on the ballot this fall, efforts are under way to put the question to voters in at least four other states in 2012. Any victory at the state Cornerstone Community Bank level would likely be short- lived since a life-at-fertiliza- tion amendment would con- flict with the U.S. Constitu- tion. Leaders of the move- ment say their ultimate goal is to provoke a court fight to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that established a legal right to abortion. Opponents say defining life as beginning at fertiliza- tion could block some com- mon forms of birth control and deter Mississippi physi- cians from performing in vitro fertilization because they'd fear criminal charges if an embryo doesn't sur- vive. They also say support- ers of the amendment are trying to impose their reli- gious beliefs on others to force women to carry unwanted pregnancies, including those caused by rape or incest. YouTube channel for 'Sesame Street' back online NEW YORK (AP) — The YouTube channel for ''Sesame Street'' is back online after hackers forced its shutdown for a day by loading X-rated Carol-Lynn Parente (pah- REHNT'-tay) said Mon- day that YouTube had taken the channel down Sunday after noticing the racy material. The chan- nel usually carries new and vintage clips from the popular preschool pro- gram. Parente says it appears that the X-rated videos were online for less than an hour and that ''Sesame Street'' had received no viewer complaints. She says, ''We have great hopes that it was found out'' before young viewers could see the X- rated material. YouTube says it coun- sels clients to adopt tougher security to avoid hackers. The channel resumed at around mid- day Monday. Arrest marks growing pains for superhero movement SEATTLE (AP) — Fabio Heuring was stand- ing outside a Seattle nightclub on a Saturday night and smoking ciga- rettes with a friend when a man bolting from a bouncer ran into them. The enraged man ripped off his shirt in the middle of the street and prepared to give Heuring's buddy a beating. Just then, in swooped a bizarre sight: a self-pro- claimed superhero in a black mask and matching muscle-suit. He doused the aggressor with pepper spray, much to Heuring's shocked relief. A couple hours later, though, the superhero ended up in jail for inves- tigation of assault after using those tactics on another group of clubgo- ers, sending pangs of anx- iety through the small, eccentric and mostly anonymous community of masked crime-fighters across the U.S. The comic book- inspired patrolling of city streets by ''real life super- heroes'' has been getting more popular in recent years, thanks largely to mainstream attention in movies like last year's ''Kick-Ass'' and the recent HBO documentary ''Superheroes.'' And as the ranks of the masked, caped and sometimes bul- let-proof-vested avengers swell, many fret that even well-intentioned vigi- lantes risk hurting them- selves, the public and the movement if they're as aggressive as the crime- fighter in Seattle. Some have gone so far as to propose a sanction- ing body to ensure that high super-hero standards are maintained. ''The movement has grown majorly,'' said Edward Stinson, a writer from Boca Raton, Fla., who advises real-life superheroes on a website devoted to the cause. ''What I tell these guys is, 'You're no longer in the shadows. You're in a new era. ... Build trust. Set standards. Make the real- life superheroes work to earn that title and take some kind of oath.''' It's not clear how many costumed vigilantes there are in the U.S. VETERANS HALL 735 OAK ST. Red Bluff, Calif.
