Loarca, who works for Tehama Coun- ty Social Services, downed 15 corn dogs in 7 minutes, beating out Johnnie Excel, a profes- sional competitor from the Los Angeles area, who finished 14 dogs. The first local to win the contest, which attracts professionals from the western region, Loarca downed 9 dogs in quali- fying Thursday, while Excel put away 11 in just 4 minutes. "I've always been a fast eater, so I gave it a shot," Loarca said after the victory. Loarca took home the grand prize of $1,000 cash. Excel took $300 for second and Jerry Leu, AKA "Leu- natik,"won $200 for third place, having finished 8 dogs in the finals. Other competitors included Rick Mederios and David Crofts, who finished 7 and 6 dogs respectively.
