Well, ROTARY DAY is a big event with lots of details. If you've seen our ad on the inside last page of the "Desert Messenger", you may have noticed we were planning to have Tortoise Racing. If you look at our ad today, you'll note those words have been deleted. Why? Well, there's a wee, little detail that we recently learned at our last planning meeting. Tortoises, despite the nursery-type tales, are quick and can be quite enter- taining in a race…but not in November when they are in their natural dormant cycle. Amazing what you (we) learn! We all got a good chuckle, too! See, this is what I mean by the details. Tortoise racing, if we do this, will be postponed until summer. There's one that talks about the RUN, WALK, ROCK and ROLL (RWRR). We want lots of people out on the morning of November 8th. We want runners, walkers, bicycles, wheel- chairs, scooters, skateboards, tricycles, slow walkers and even people who walk with walkers! We want you to run, walk and roll — however you can. And, we want you whether younger or older or somewhere in between. If you are a runner, bicy- clist or serious walker it's a 5K race. All others can ex- pect a much shorter course anywhere from 1/8 mile to 1 mile. We want everyone out there raising money for the Food Bank and End Polio Now. We don't want just bodies, we want a spectacle. Go nuts and decorate yourselves, your wheelchairs, walk- ers, tricycles. We'll have prizes for the best of the craziest things we see. Be creative! It's easy to win a prize - you really have to get our attention. The RWRR is a fund raising event with net proceeds being split 50/50 between our QUARTZSITE FOOD BANK and Rotary International's END POLIO NOW.* The sponsorship fee for each person who participates in the RWRR is $25. Sponsorship fee? What is that? Since RWRR is to raise money, you are helping us by fi nding someone, or a group of people, to sponsor you in this event. And since it is only $25, you can choose to be your own sponsor (that works also). Every entrant will get a t-shirt and lunch, so it is well worth the cost of sponsor- ship! Don't forget that we are giving away prizes, too. Start planning your "crazy" costume, or fi gure out a way to make your walker or wheel- chair stand out in a crowd. After the RWRR is over, join us for our Chuck Wagon lunch and stay for the games, vote for your favorites in the Car and Motorcycle Show…take a chance on the raffl es… and win one of our grand prizes in the pie bobbing contest. Mark Saturday, NOVEM- BER 8TH on your calendar *Net proceeds from RUN WALK ROCK & ROLL and the CAR & MO- TORCYCLE SHOW entries will be split equally between QUARTZSITE FOOD BANK and END POLIO NOW. All net proceeds from other events at Rotary Day will go to the Quartzsite Rotary General Funds of which 100% will be used for betterment of Quartzsite and the surrounding area communities. Quartzsite Rotary's Violet Kiss went to Ehrenberg Elementary School on the Sept. 15th. The next day Robin Cooper joined her at Quartzsite Elementary to give out dictionaries. (PHOTOS Page 3) This is a tradition with Rotary Clubs around the world to engage in increas- ing literacy with 3rd graders. They started a new tradition giving to both schools in the District and adding 4th grader as well. Kiss stated, "We want to keep showing there are a lot of people and organizations that care about our QSD#4 District's children and their parents. We know these are our future and we want to help them with theirs to be better equipped, to learn, and to enjoy while they are doing it. The dictionaries are the students' own personal books for them to keep and use for years to come. Rotary believes that a dictionary in the home can help promote literacy for the entire family. Dictionaries can help students learn new words and encourage them to continue reading at higher and higher levels. Its usefulness goes beyond the spellings, pronunciations, and defi ni- tions it lists; it is a companion for solv- ing the problems that arise as a child develops his or her reading, writing, and creative thinking abilities.
