pg. 3 Chi Omega CHAPTER OMEGA Hazel H. Pugh '29, at the age of 101, entered Chapter Omega on February 15, 2013, in Michigan City, Ind. Alice Shankland Miller '44 entered Chapter Omega on May 17, 2014, in Kansas City, Mo. She enjoyed serving on many boards and committees during her life; each was an opportunity to meet and befriend new people. Alice was predeceased by husband of 53 years, Plez Jr., in 2000, as well as son, Plez III in 2007. Survivors include her children, David and Allison, and three grandchildren. Margaret "Peg" O'Neil Vlademar '45 of Fort Smith, Ark., entered Chapter Omega on November 27, 2013. In her career, she was employed as an occupational therapist in several hospitals and retired from VAMC in Leavenworth, Kan., as chief of the O.T. department. She was a member and past president of EN P.E.O. chapter, a past board member of the Women's Community Y and for a number of years she wove rugs for the Leavenworth Assistance Center. Peg was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Matthew; children: Cathy, Susan, and Stan; three grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Helen Heath '47 entered Chapter Omega on October 9, 2013. She earned a degree in bacteriology from KU, was active in student body government, and worked on the Jayhawker yearbook. Helen was a lifetime member of the KU Alumni Association and was actively involved in the Chi Omega Foundation and the president of the Kansas City Area Chi Omega Alumni Association. Her dedicated work in hematology for 35 years at the University of Kansas Medical Center included teaching at the KU Medical School as an assistant professor from 1978 to 1984 and selecting and mentoring students in the medical technology program for many years. Following her retirement, Helen returned to Salina, where she was active in the community, and in 2012 she moved to Lawrence to be closer to family. Diana Sherwood Rinehart '49 entered Chapter Omega on May 16, 2014, in Tulsa, Okla. It was during a Chi O hour dance that she met her husband, Bill. His career in the plastics and oil business took them to Kansas, Texas, and Oklahoma. Diana was an active member of the Republican Party and served for six years as Orange County, Texas, Republican county chairman and was vice chairman of the Tulsa County Republican party during the 1988 presidential campaign of her longtime friend, George H.W. Bush. Diana also worked as a journalist for five years, writing the Sunday supplement Spice magazine for her hometown newspaper, the Orange Leader. She is survived by Bill; their four sons: Bill, Corbin, Todd, and Jeff; and seven grandchildren. Jane Pope Gagel '50 entered Chapter Omega on October 6, 2013. She was a resident of Englewood, Colo. Jane was a member of the Peace Pipes Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is survived by her children: Kurt, Pamela, and Gretchen; four grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren. Kathy McKee Widick Crawford '53 entered Chapter Omega on February 22, 2014, in Cocoa Beach, Fla. She was married to Fritz Widick and they had four children. In later years she married Charlie Crawford, originally from Topeka, who was also a KU graduate. Kay Black Miller '64 entered Chapter Omega on October 24, 2013. She earned her master's degree in weaving and her first position was as editor of Good Housekeeping's Needlecraft Magazine in New York City. Marriage took her to central Florida where she worked at Robb and Stuckey as an interior designer. She is survived by her daughter, Meagan. ALUMNAE NEWS Katharine Kufahl Bales '44 celebrated her 90th birthday in October 2013 with her whole family. In the last several years her family has grown by three grandchildren. Her art is produced in a variety of media and covers such diverse work as portraits, book covers, a billboard painting, and both graphic and commercial art. Anne has twice been nominated for the prestigious Anne Robb Townsend award for outstanding Northland women. She was a member of the Mayor's Commission for the new Kansas City seal, served on the Kansas City Human Relations Commission and the Metropolitan Commission on the Status of Women, and chaired the Tri-County Domestic Violence board. Suzanne's daughter-in-law, Marlis Reece Wilbur '74, and her granddaughter, Brooke 'YR, are both Lambdas at KU. Sallie Callender Trotter '56 shares that all of her grandkids are gown up, ages 18 through 25. She had breast cancer in 2009 but is doing fine now! Sallie's sister, Susan Callendal Rettig, a Pi Phi at KU, passed away from lung cancer in 2010 at the age of 68. Sallie sure loved her Chi O days! Chris Hoidale Cooper '59 and her husband, Ed, celebrated their 50th anniversary last year at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs where they honeymooned. Their whole family was there to celebrate with them. Chris and Ed are enjoying retirement by traveling and spending time with their grandchildren and friends. They live in Wichita, Kan. She retired from teaching at the Kansas City Art Institute but still does studio work and is a docent at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. She had a residency in Venice, Italy, for a month last July and enjoyed visiting the extraordinary city. Her youngest is eight and a delightful violinist in the family's string ensemble. Melissa worked as a nurse practitioner in Ob/Gyn and family medicine for 20-plus years before retiring to homeschool her children fulltime from kindergarten to 12th grade. They honeymooned in the Maldives and Malaysia and attended the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Josh is the founder of With a Purpose, which sells one-for-one collegiate-licensed merchandise—for every product sold, one is donated to a local charity of the university.
