ALICE WHITE '65 HOLDS LIFETIME FULL OF CHI OMEGA CONNECTIONS T hough most of her time as an undergraduate was spent studying, the influence of the Chi Omegas surrounding her was undeniable. "I so admired my Chi Omega sisters, many of whom were far more career focused than I was at the time. I was proud to have known sisters who were planning to be attorneys, doctors, teachers, or planning ahead to doctoral degrees. I didn't have that kind of focus, but it was inspiring to rub shoulders with some of those who did." Alice's own career path did lead to further education and work in numerous fields, including development and higher education preparation. She was a public school teacher of Russian, Spanish, speech, and even physical education after college, but her trajectory began to change as she went to work for Dodge City Community College in community relations. Moving to Texas, Alice earned her Ph.D. from University of Texas-Austin in mass communication research. The dean hired her full time to be their fundraising development manager, managing annual fundraising and scholarship endowments. Next on her journey was the Texas Department of Health, where she worked for nine years in a variety of positions, including directing a social marketing campaign to vaccinate babies in Texas. When she returned to higher education, it was first with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's College for Texans campaign, then with the Texas Tech University System, and finally with Texas Tech University. Now retired, Alice continues to connect people and organizations and works as an individual financial investor. "What I tried to do in much of my career was consciously and systematically look for joy and fulfillment in the job I was doing." In her moves throughout the country, time and time again, the Chi Omega bonds weaved their way into Alice's life. From the beginning, it was a recommendation from the mother of a high school friend that gave Alice the opportunity to join Chi O. When she has moved to new cities, the Chi Omega alumnae groups have graciously welcomed her. "When I moved to Fredericksburg, Texas, I hit the motherload in terms of friendships. The Chi Omegas warmly embraced me and included me in all of their activities. I am blessed with multitudes of wonderful friends and Chi Omega is an important source of those friends." When she returns home to Wichita, Alice still meets up with her pledge mother. "I am overjoyed by the enduring friendships and all the blessings I've had in life. I couldn't have imagined that my life would turn out to be so splendid and fun and fulfilling. And Chi Omega has been a part of that." Alice gives back to Chi Omega undergraduates at KU, Texas Tech, and University of Texas-Austin through three scholarship endowments that support members who volunteer in an animal rescue program. "This matchup has been a way for me to reconnect with Chi Omega and match my deep passion for dogs and cats with Chi Omega." Alice can be reached at Alice.V.White@gmail.com.
