TheAssociatedPress KERNVILLE A wildfire northeast of Bakersfield burning in steep terrain destroyed eight homes and was threatening more than a thousand others, authori- ties said Wednesday. The blaze near Lake Is- abella was 15 percent con- tained after scorching about 5 square miles, Kern County Fire Capt. Derek Tisinger said. Firefighters working in drought conditions con- tinued building contain- ment lines after stopping the spread of the flames on Tuesday. "There's still huge poten- tial here, especially with the dry weather," Tisinger said. "We're not out of the woods yet." Eight single-family homes have been destroyed since the fire broke out on Monday, he said. Ten other structures were damaged, but it wasn't immediately clear how many or if any were homes. An estimated 1,500 homes in the Wofford Heights and Kernville areas remained threatened. Resi- dents of about 200 of those homes were under evacua- tion orders. The cause of the fire about 50 miles northeast of Bakersfield was under investigation. To the north, the remain- ing residents evacuated be- cause of a wildfire that led to mass evacuations near Yosemite National Park were allowed to return to their homes Wednesday. "We're at the point where we're turning the corner with the progress we had last night and yesterday," state fire spokesman Chris Christopherson said. The flames drove about 1,000 people from their homes around Oakhurst, a community of several thou- sand in Madera County. Roughly 400 evacuees were allowed to return on Tues- day, with the rest given the green light to return on Wednesday morning. The fire has burned about 1 square mile and was 40 percent contained. It started on Monday and quickly took off because of strong winds and tinder- dry conditions. Fire officials reported the destruction of an additional structure, bring the total of number of structures de- stroyed to nine. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries. The cause of the blaze was under inves- tigation. A road leading visitors to the park reopened Tuesday, and the park remained un- affected by the blaze. The fire comes amid Cal- ifornia's third straight year of drought, creating tinder- dry conditions that have significantly increased the fire danger around the state and sent firefighters scram- bling seemingly nonstop from blaze to blaze. The zone will include more than cloudy skies and gloomy conditions. Within this zone, clusters of flooding downpours can occur with isolated severe thunderstorms delivering strong wind gusts, hail and frequent lightning strikes. This battle zone will separate cool air over the upper Great Lakes and New England from a mass of building hot, humid air over the South. Parts of the South may have their hottest weather of the summer.
