They had 10.2, second with 8.6 was Ray Hembree and George Crosswhite and third with 2.6 was Fred Wright and Dean Champion. Big fish of the day was a 2.7 largemouth brought in by the team of Hembree and Crosswhite. This week it is back to Lake Wylie. Moss Two weeks of fishing from Moss Lakes Thursday night events are up this week. On the week of the 4th, only 9 boats came out and it was won by Reggie and Johnny Guffey with 12.0, they also had big bass with a 3.39 largmouth. Rusell Kiser and Brandon Dockery were second with 7.58. Last week, 16 boats fished and once again Johnny and Reggie Guffey got the win, this time with 12.31. Buddy and Lindsey Black took second with 10.26 followed by J R Garland and Ronnie Beason with 7.22. Fourth went to Jeremy Bolton and Tyler Ward with 6.78. Big bass was a 5.03 brought in by Reggie and Johnny Guffey. CCBC The Cleveland County Bass Club fished Stumpy Pond last Saturday for their July event. Conditions were not very good and weights show this. Larry Melton won with 4.32. Tyler Ward was second with 3.94 with Charlie Canipe in third with 2.64. Tammy Melton had 2.24 and was fourth and in fifth was Jimmy Melton with 1.56. The CCBC will fish Lake Greenwood in August. Bruc Ko Kosa sa sa sa B K OUTDOOR TRUTHS It's hard to believe that even now bow hunters must begin thinking about the upcoming season. Not only do trail cam- eras need to be set up but, more impor- tantly, we need to be honing our shot- making skills. And since I'm not one who shoots all year long, I am even more concerned about beginning this process. In bow hunting, the margin of error is extremely narrow, so for the ben- efi t of everything involved, it is crucial that a well-placed shot be made. But there is also more that magnifi es this need. For me, I will make another trip to Pike County, Illinois and will also make my annual trip to Missouri. I do not take either of these trips for granted. They both are home to some bruiser bucks that most of us rarely get to see, much less have an opportunity to harvest. To be unprepared for these opportunities would really demean and trivialize these rare occasions. For me, these trips are the highlight of my hunting season and the last word that needs to categorize these few days is "regret." When I think about this whole scenario, it really does fi t into the way much of life works. If you notice, most of the time, the greater the opportunity and the greater the skill level; the longer the preparation. For instance, a heart surgeon must go to school longer than a mechanic. The importance of the heart surgeon getting her job right carries more weight than does the mechanic. If my mechanic makes a mistake, I am stranded. If the cardiolo- gist makes a mistake, I'm dead. And while both use their hands and some very intricate tools, one must prepare longer because of the limited opportunity and the price of failure. Again, I may bring my truck back to my mechanic for a second time in order to get it right but I may not have the opportunity for a second visit to my heart doctor. Now back to my deer hunt. I rarely have an opportunity to hunt big bucks in places like Pike County, Illinois. I may never get the opportunity to go back. So therefore, I need to make sure that, should I get the chance to shoot one of those Pope and Young bucks, I am confi dent in my skills to place a good and effective shot. And while this is my desire every year and while I practice for this same purpose every year; the cost of getting it wrong when so much is on the line, drives me to begin even sooner. If you are a bow hunter, you know what I am talking about. But here's the clincher. The great- est decision in anyone's life, and the one that carries the most weight, is what decision you will make about eternity. To wait any longer to make this decision is to not understand its gravity. And to remain unprepared for it is to demean and trivialize the excep- tional opportunity. By By Gary Miller Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ GARY MILLER gary@outdoortruths.org ~ www.outdoortruths.org Why Pier Fishing Is So Productive Midsummer is a wonderful time for those who love to fish from piers. Piers draw all kinds of fishermen because they attract all kinds of fish. Here's why: they provide submerged structure. Many are lit at night, which is another fish attractor. And, if over a period of time a pier is fished by a lot of people, the area around a fishing pier becomes a baited hole. Cobia, king mackerel, and tarpon occasionally venture close enough to catch. More often, redfish, speckled trout, flounder, and pompano are the priority targets. Panfish though, are the "bread and butter" fish of most anglers who fish piers. Whiting, also known as ground mullet, are tasty and feisty, as are croaker and sand trout. Sheepshead, gafftopsail catfish, and big black drum are also caught at different times. Fishing piers offer easy access to an excellent diverse fishery.
