The group included supporters of the Foothills Conservan- cy and members of Catawba Valley Outing Club. The First Broad is a beautiful, ancient river with lots of turns, a sandy bottom and moss covered rock outcroppings. The riverbanks are fi lled with trees and vegetation. The Cleveland County Water District wants to harness the waters of this river by placing a dam near Lawndale, NC, which would create a sinewy 24-mile reservoir that would fl ood 1500 acres of woods and farmland. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has recommended that building a reservoir is not the best option for maintain- ing water supply to the area. Contributors M. Mullis, N. Isenhour, T.
