Central Quartzsite Open Mon-Fri 8-5 928-927-8787 Johnny DelPino, Owner BEST AUTO RV & TRUCK REPAIR SERVICE YOU CAN DEPEND ON! We sell U-HAUL BOXES Quartzsite, AZ - Last week, Pastor Mike Hobby of Isaiah 58 Project updated Quartzsite Town Council on the status of their La Paz County tax assessment case. Hobby told the council, "State law says that no matter how the tax is levied against the property, you have to pay the tax and then protest it [in court]." The Arizona Supreme Court denied to hear the case. Now they have to pay the taxes and then attorneys can argue the case in court. Hobby said, "and that's what we're going to do. The church tried to change the law for everyone, but it didn't work. If all the pledges come in, we'll be okay. By the end of the month, the total will be $66, 695.42, including interest." Having once been homeless, Pastor Mike Hobby and his wife Linda felt called by God to establish a church in Quartzsite, Arizona to minister to the physical needs of the home- less and hurting. For the past three years, attorneys from litigated the case, but the Arizona courts have refused to al- low the challenge to the illegal tax until the church pays the tax fi rst. Most recently, the Arizona Su- preme Court refused to accept the church's challenge. Providing a free clothes closet, place to shower, job counseling, transportation, and approximately 13,000 meals every winter season to the homeless, the Church of the Isaiah 58 Project lives up to its cen- tral scripture verses, Isaiah 58:7,10, on a shoestring budget around $50,000 per year. But on June 1st, the ministry faces foreclosure. Why? The Church of the Isaiah 58 Project of Arizona is allegedly being illegally taxed. On May 8th, Church of Isaiah 58 was served a notice of intent to for- close on the property. Richard Old- ham, the fi rst mayor of Quartzsite, had the church served for a tax lien he purchased at auction. The foreclosure is slated to begin on June 1st. If the church pays off the tax, not only can it survive, but attorneys can challenge the tax and seek a refund. A win in this case would prevent these types of illegal actions in the future. You can send donations directly to the church here: Isaiah 58 Project of Arizona, P.O. Box 1713, Quartzsite, AZ 85346. Or you can reach the church by phone at (928) 927-3124.
