Special to Desert Messenger By Lyle Browning University of Arizona . Cooperative Extension Service Summers along the lower Colorado River are not like summers in most of the country. Hot. Dry. Windy. Pruning, especially severe pruning, can mean damage to plants. Even death. Palms here don't mind the heat but severe pruning in the hot sun can mean death to the palm if so many leaves are removed that the crown of the plant is exposed to the hot sun. Tall palms are expensive to prune so it is understandable we would cut as much as possible, but too much leaf removal can endanger the plant. Pruning plants that are marginal in summer can also cause the plant to die. It has happened here. If you are considering pruning in the heat of summer, feel free to contact us. We can provide advice on how to prune and how much to take. We are here to advise on all plant questions. The service is free and we are happy to talk with you. Telephone us at 928 669-9843 or visit us at 2524 Mutahar next to Shea road.
