By Andre Byik sports@redbluffdailynews.com @TehamaSports on Twitter Mercy High School girls basket- ball fans last season watched one of the state's best Division VI players in action. Jessica Curl, a multi-sport ath - lete at the school who was named the 2013-14 Daily News Female Athlete of the Winter Season, was a domi- nant force in the Lady Warriors' run to the Northern Section title game in Chico in March. The post player led the section in both points per game and rebounds per game, tallying an astounding 21.4 and 19.7, respectively. The William Jessup University- bound senior also led the section with a 60-percent free-throw percentage, and was behind only Redding Chris - tian's Kayle Brown in field-goal per- centage and Paradise Adventist Acad- emy's Margo Moore in blocks per game. Curl seemingly willed the Warriors to a 9-3 Five Star League record, and an overall record of 23-6. In the pro - cess, she put up a section-leading 622 points, which was more than 100 points more than the American Chris- tian Academy player behind her. In the postseason, Curl averaged about 19 points and 20 rebounds in the Warriors' three games, which each came down to just a possession or two. In the Warriors' slim 66-65 vic - tory over Redding Christian in the quarterfinal roud of the section play- offs, Curl put up 22 points and 20 re- bounds. In Mercy's 34-31 win over Paradise Adventist Academy in the semifinal round, Curl struck with 19 points and 22 rebounds. When the No. 3 Warriors finally fell to the top-seeded Westwood Lumberjacks 56-50 at Chico State's Acker Gym in the section title game, Curl's under-the-basket play and awareness kept Mercy in the game. She notched 15 points and 17 re - bounds in the loss. After that game, Mercy coach Steve Shellabarger said that reaching the section finals, even with a roster that was shorthanded and injured at times, was the goal all along. With Curl, who will enter college with the intent of playing both volley - ball and basketball and is currently on Mercy's softball team, it's easy to see why. Without her, it'd be safe to say, the Mercy faithful would have had three fewer games to cheer on a group of players who nearly pulled off a title- game upset. femAle ATHleTe Of SeASON Mercy High's Curl filled the stat book Basketball star nearly averaged 20 points, rebounds per game ANDRE BYIK — DAILY NEWS Mercy High basketball player Jessica Curl (le), who was named the 2013-14 Daily News Female Athlete of the Winter Season, drives to the basket against Westwood in March in Chico.
