O ur chapter continues to improve their processes and academic performance even as the chapter begins a year-long suspension by the University. The leadership of the chapter has been dedicated since spring 2013 to removing or changing all of the "traditions" and lack of accountability that brought the chapter to its current status. Although this opening paragraph seems incongruous at best, the young leaders who have comprised the Executive Council over the past two semesters, and the current Executive Council members, are working extremely hard to base the Illinois Beta experience on success in academics, community service, and continuing member education. One of the biggest short-term challenges for the chapter during this suspension is recruitment. It would be very helpful for alumni to forward information about young high school men who are graduating and will attend UIUC. If you have information about family, friends, or acquaintances who may be incoming freshman and you consider to be good candidates for Illinois Beta of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, please forward their contact information to me at dougf@hkusa.com, or call me at (217) 714-5204. The recent announcement by the national fraternity to discontinue the concept and apparatus of pledging and pledge education comes at an interesting and challenging time for our chapter. While the education programming for pledges at Illinois Beta (one of the initial reasons for the suspension) has been improved and modified, it still falls short of creating the foundation for brothers to thrive in a community dedicated to service, philanthropy, and academics. Our young, recolonized chapter is only in its fourth year. Having a member education program that supports individual and fraternal growth throughout the entire university experience, rather than a narrow focus on three months as a freshman, increases the potential for lifelong benefit and commitment to the chapter and University. Finally, thanks to all alumni who have answered the call for support through this newsletter. Your donations and messages are greatly appreciated. If you're ever back on campus, do not hesitate to visit 211 E. Daniel. The current brothers will welcome you, and I think you'll be reminded about how good and how pleasant it is to be a part of our beloved order.
