Seems ever since spring sports started, we’ve been kind of missing out on one of the main ingredi- ents — spring. That’s ok, adapt- ing every once in awhile is fine. Sometimes a coach has to move his prac- tice schedule around to adjust for the rain or a columnist has to move his column to the bottom of the page. It’s fine, because eventually we all knew these days would Rich Greene come. These beautiful, beautiful days. There might not be a better time to live in Red Bluff. But you already, knew that. It’s especially true, for us sports fans. Already spoiled with the Final Four and the opening of the baseball season — the local scene around here just adds icing to the cake. The Round-Up is just a few weeks away and sandwiched around it will be some great high school sports. For all the losses Spartan fans have had to deal with it the past few months — Red Bluff’s suc- cess in spring makes up for it. It starts with the softball pro- gram, which this year will be looking for a three-peat. Teams fear the Lady Spar- tans the way other sports often treat a Pleasant Valley. Red Bluff gets everyone’s best effort — and best of all the Lady Spartans give it right back. If you have never seen them play — trust me, spend an after- noon and do it. They play with fundamen- tals, they play with skill and they play with passion. Hard to find another team around that does that. On the other diamond the Spartans’ baseball team is in the midst of another strong season under coach Joe Gallaty. There’s some solid senior leadership on the team and a nice collection of juniors con- tributing. The Spartans golf team is also defending a title after win- ning the Division I champi- onship a season ago. Sopho- more sensations Daniel Frantz and Peter Mitzel are back to lead the way. Red Bluff’s track team is going to make noise as well. Colin Dahlberg seems to have his injuries behind him and should prove to be on the sec- tion’s best by May. The girls are led by Erin Eicholtz, a true stu- dent-athlete to root for. Thunder Shaffer, C.J. Varner, Cody Yarbrough and Paul Hen- dricks lead a strong Spartans tennis team that is getting better with experience and the Lady Spartans’ soccer team always provides a match with plenty of excitement. So Spartan fans, enjoy this weather and these winning teams. If you’re free tonight there’s a doubleheader waiting for you. The softball team plays at 4 p.m. and the baseball team follows at 6 p.m. Put on the shades and screen and go soak up some sports along with the sun.
