Gamma Phone michigan Gamma Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon • michigan state University Alumni Support Makes Chapter Improvements Possible I am proud to report that Michigan Gamma is as strong as we've ever been. We extended 28 bids for our spring pledge class and I am proud to report that all 28 bids were accepted. When these young men go active, Michigan Gamma Chapter will be 110 brothers strong. In addition, we have 34 signed leases to live in the chapter house for the 2014-15 school year, putting us at full capacity. I want to give special thanks to the alumni who have supported Michigan Gamma in the past, are currently supporting the chapter, or thinking of supporting them in the future. I always hear from alumni that no one wants to "throw good money after bad," but I assure you, Michigan Gamma is a good investment. The Michigan Gamma alumni have helped send more than 20 brothers to Leadership School in the past two years, generously donating over $12,000 to pay for tuition scholarships for the brothers to attend. They've donated funds to pay for the Gamma Phone newsletter program so that we can keep alumni up to date about the good things that are happening in East Lansing. They've donated to a reserve fund that will be used this summer to fix up the chapter house when Lambda Chi Alpha moves out and Sigma Alpha Epsilon moves in. Michigan Gamma alumni have donated books on leadership to the brothers attending Leadership School each year. Finally, Michigan Gamma alumni have donated their time on the Chapter Advisory Board, as mentors to the brothers, and just asking other brothers to donate and get involved. The undergraduate brothers and the Michigan Gamma Alumni Association want to give a hearty Phi Alpha to you. Some other good things happening include: • We had two brothers attend the inaugural Eminent Archon Institute, a leadership program focused solely on providing our EAs with the tools and leadership skills needed to run the chapter. The tuition for this was generously paid for by Michigan Gamma alumni. • In the last edition of the Gamma Phone, you noticed that Michigan Gamma won the SAE Colony of the Year award last summer. The chapter has committed to being nominated for the John O. Moseley Zeal Award, which recognizes chapters that excel in the 12 core areas of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. With your continued support, Michigan Gamma will not only be nominated for the award, but could win it. • The chapter, alumni, and SAE Financial & Housing Corporation will begin an exhaustive search for a new house director (house mom) in the coming months. The first floor apartment will accommodate the house director and he/she will be responsible for ensuring the young men are living in a safe environment, following the rules of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, acting as True Gentlemen, and ensuring the physical structure of the house is taken care of. • In addition to the house director, a full time maid will be hired to ensure the house is always clean. This service is included in the rent the brothers pay. No more showing up before or after a football or basketball game and finding the house in such deplorable condition, you walk away. • The 2nd annual Michigan Gamma golf tournament will take place this spring. The details are included on page 5. We encourage you to attend and show your support for the young men. • The chapter house will go through minor renovations this summer to bring the house up to a minimum standard that all SAE F&H owned properties are required to meet. This means the house will have the most up to date fire suppression and fire alarm equipment. Each room will be fully furnished so we don't have damage from brothers moving furniture in and out. • Recognizing the need to ensure the chapter house will be competitive 50 years from now, a committee is forming to evaluate the current needs of today's students and see if a major renovation needs to take place. They will also assess whether the needs are financially feasible. If you have interest in being on this committee, please contact me. Thanks for your support, both past and present. You can be proud to be associated with Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Michigan Gamma. Phi Alpha, Gregory Somers '98 Michigan Gamma Alumni Association President gsomers@sae.net
