TERMPRO.COM/ aSP/COMPETiTORSTaTS. aSP?COMPETiTOR_iD=79253 Adventure travel writer Joel Stratte-McClure will present the second travel narrative in his Mediter - ranean trilogy, "The Idiot and the Odyssey II: Myth, Madness and Magic on the Mediterranean," when he speaks at the March 8 Writers Forum in Red - ding. The meeting will be 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Memorial Hall of All Saints Episcopal Church, 2150 Benton Drive, Red - ding. Stratte-McClure w ill discuss the genesis of his Idiot-ic project, and the evolution of his personal odyssey, deta iling the merits of an exciting eB - ook compared to a printed edition, and describing the status, requirements and drama of contemporary publishing. The narrative, which takes readers 4,401 kilo - meters from Rome to Tur- key, was initially published in 2013 as an eBook — on iBooks, Kindle, Nook and as a .pdf — with interactive maps, intriguing links and two hundred photographs. It appeared in paperback, without the complemen - tary material, six months after the eBook version hit cyberspace. Stratte-McClure, a grad - uate of Shasta High School in Redding, lived in France for more than three de- cades, and has been writ- ing about his global trek- king and hiking adventures since the 1970s. His work has taken him to more than 100 countries and his articles have ap - peared in such places as Time Magazine, The Lon- don Times, People Mag- azine, The International Herald Tribune, Scientific American, Cosmopolitan and numerous other pub - lications. Stratte-McClure's first book, "The Idiot and the Odyssey: Walking the Med - iterranean," recounted the 4,401-kilometer MedTrek from the Algerian border to Rome, and was published in 2008 by a traditional pub - lisher on paper and on Kin- dle. Both books are available online or locally in paper - back at Enjoy the Store and All About Books. They will be available to Writ- ers Forum members dur- ing his presentation on March 8. The public is always wel- come to attend. First visit is free. Donations are re- quested at the refreshment table. For further details or directions to the new loca- tion, call 547-5303, or visit w w w.redding w r itersfo - rum. Writers Forum, a non- profit organization founded in 1983, is dedicated to pro- moting writing as an art and as a profession and to supporting and inspiring writers from all over far northern California. to Do Adventure travel writer to speak Stratte-McClure presents second narrative in Mediterranean trilogy Angela Ford is one of those incredibly funny women whose sense of hu- mor requires a bit of intelligence, I respect that. I look forward to Angela's posts on Facebook because they are usually witty, sometimes sarcastic and always positive. Even her negative comments, though rare, are light in nature and don't give the impression that there are demons lurk - ing within her psyche. What I have noticed about Angela over the years, apart from living up to the official red-head ste - reotypes, is that she is in love with a lot of things. All in a good way. First off, Angela loves her job. She loves what she does. I am not sure what di - vision she works in, but if I were her management, I would be honored to have someone work for me that was as devoted to their em - ployment as she is. There is this sidekick she has at work, Makenzie, who com- pletes her, it would seem, because she gushes about her all the time. It's re- freshing and a wonderful example to others to cele- brate that which you do on a daily basis and those you do it with. Angela loves her son. Have you seen him? You can't miss him and his mas - sive red beard that I am pretty sure has its own so- cial security number. It is its own entity and I am sure it is causing rabid beard envy amongst the younger set. You've heard of ginger bread, he has the ultimate ginger beard. She loves that boy like no mamma has ever loved a child. It is refreshing and a wonderful exam - ple to others to cel- ebrate that which makes you a parent and those you raise up in this world. Angela recently lost a significant amount of weight. She did it all the safe and steady way and with commitment, hard work and sacrifice and hu - mor. It is harder for us women of a certain age to lose weight than it was just ten years ago and Angela has had a great attitude about the whole thing. It is refreshing and a wonderful example to others to cele - brate your health and hard work that you do on a daily basis to make positives change in your life. So, if you see a slender, beautiful red head who beams with happiness, you may be seeing An - gela and you might want to let her know that her at- titudes about life are en- couraging. You could tell her that she matters be- cause she is a positive force in an oftentimes neg- ative place. She chooses to be funny instead of criti- cal, she chooses health in- stead of self-sabotage, she embraces individuality in- stead of requiring confor- mity. That's some pretty cool stuff right there. Faydra Rector, MA is a men - tal health administrator, au- thor, public speaker, educa- tor and life coach who lives in Red Bluff.
