The Associated Press BEIJING » North Korea on Monday deported an Aus- tralian missionary detained for spreading Christianity in the country, saying he apol- ogized for his anti-state reli- gious acts and requested for- giveness. Authorities in North Ko- rea had arrested John Short for secretly spreading Bible tracts near a Buddhist tem- ple in Pyongyang on Feb. 16, the birthday of late leader Kim Jong Il, the North's of- ficial Korean Central News Agency said. The report said that Short, 75, admitted he com - mitted a crime that hurt the Korean people's trust in their leaders and that he apologized for his behavior. "I now realize the seri - ousness of my insult to the Korean people on February 16th because I made the Ko- rean people angry and for this I truly apologize," Short was quoted as saying in a written apology, according to separate KCNA report. KCNA said North Korea decided to expel him in part out of consideration for his age. Short arrived later Mon - day on a flight to Beijing, where he declined to speak to reporters saying he was too tired and was escorted to a vehicle from the Austra - lian Embassy. "Clearly this is welcome news for Mr. Short, his fam- ily and his supporters," Aus- tralia's Department of For- eign Affairs and Trade said in a statement. North Korea's constitu- tion guarantees freedom of religion, but in practice only sanctioned services are tol- erated by the government. Defectors from the coun- try have said that the distri- bution of Bibles and secret prayer services can mean banishment to a labor camp or execution. North Korea typically frees foreign detainees af - ter they've admitted their crimes, but many say after their releases that their con- fessions were given involun- tarily and under duress. Last week, North Korea pre- sented a detained South Ko- rean Baptist missionary who apologized for allegedly try- ing to reach Pyongyang with Bibles and Christian instruc- tional materials in October. asIa North Korea deports Australian missionary Australian missionary John Short, le, walks from the airport terminal as he arrives at Beijing International Airport in Beijing, China, on Monday. Short was deported from North Korea aer he was detained for spreading Christianity in the country and apologized for his anti-state religious acts and requested forgiveness. VINCeNt thIAN — the ASSoCIAted PreSS By Hayley Tsukayama The Washington Post Microsoft announced a major overhaul of its se- nior leadership team Mon- day, the first move by its new chief executive, Satya Nadella, to articulate a vi- sion for the firm. Nadella named Mark Penn, former strategist for Hillary Rodham Clin - ton and Microsoft's exec- utive vice president of ad- vertising and strateg y, chief strategy officer. He also said two of the firm's top executives — market - ing chief Tami Reller and business development ex- ecutive Tony Bates — will be leaving. The moves are not that surprising, analysts said. Microsoft has been lag - ging for years, and the de- parture of Steve Ballmer presented an opportunity for a major shakeup, they said. Bates, formerly chief ex - ecutive of Skype before Mi- crosoft bought the firm in 2011, was seen as a strong internal candidate for the chief executive position be - fore Nadella's appointment. He was not expected to stay long after being passed over for the position, said IDC analyst Al Hilwa. As for Reller, who has been with the company since 2001, Hilwa said she might be a victim of the firm's inability to pick up customers with its latest operating system, Win - dows 8. "The folks spearheading the advertising strategy ap- pear to be affected, as the campaign for Windows 8 was probably considered not a great value for the money," Hilwa said. "It's a product issue, but very of - ten the marketing, advertis- ing and PR take hits in an engineering company." Penn's promotion was the most eyecatching for many analysts. He joined Microsoft 18 months ago, at the request of then-chief ex - ecutive Ballmer, to focus on Microsoft's search engine, Bing. He used his hardball political skills to launch an anti-Google campaign called "Scroogled," which raised questions about Google's privacy practices and also raised eyebrows for its negative tone. Penn added advertising duties to his job eight months ago. W h e n B a l l m e r a n - nounced a major Micro- soft reorganization in July, Penn was asked to help re- make the company's image as a devices and services company and was central to developing the firm's heartstring-tugging Super Bowl ad.
