Benjamin Patton photo By Karen Miritello It is early evening and a lurching sensation passes through my stom- ach. I do my best to ignore it until the phone rings about 45 minutes later. "Your husband has had a motorcycle accident," the caller from Bassett Hospital says. "He is alive and asked that we call you, but we need you to get here as soon as possible." Quick as I can, I get the neighbor to stay with my sleeping child and rush to the hospital. Along the way I pass the motorcycle on the side of the road and see the place where flares have scorched the pavement. The moment of impact has come and gone, and nameless others have responded to the emergency. The only calling card of their work is the neck brace I find my husband wearing as a precaution when I arrive at the Emergency Room. The bones will heal and he will be OK, and for the moment that is all that matters. But later, I wonder about the people who were there with him in his hour of need, at that bend in the road where he lay, between the ditch and the apple trees. They are the "forgotten" ones.
