Historical Exhibit Displays Storied Legacy of Alpha Nu T he 100th anniversary of Alpha Nu Beta in the Usher Mansion was celebrated on September 27-28 in Lawrence. Thank you to everyone who attended and made this celebration possible, as it was truly an amazing weekend of history and brotherhood. The active chapter spent several weeks preparing the house and historical exhibit for alumni to enjoy, and we are very pleased that everyone in attendance appeared to have a splendid time. Events began on Friday evening as alumni, spouses, and distinguished guests began to arrive and rekindle the memories of their college days. Todd Johnson '75 and his new Kansas City restaurant, Plowboys Barbecue, provided a delicious barbecue buffet. Be sure to check out their new selection of smoked meats if you live in the Kansas City area. Special thanks are extended to Paul Arnold '75 for coordinating and emceeing the singing competition on Friday and Saturday night. The pledge class of 2017, the Terrible Twelve of 1975, and a combined performance from the pledge classes of 1976 and 1977 kept everyone entertained. They all did a great job. Following their performances, a real group of rock stars took over the stage, as Garrett Childers '11, Jesse Roberts '09, and their Lawrence-based band, Quiet Corral, provided musical entertainment for the rest of the evening. The diversity of age groups in attendance was perhaps most apparent during this jam session as folks between the ages of 18 and 88 danced and sang together. Throughout the evening, guests trickled in and out of the historical exhibit on display in the dining hall. The exhibit involved a marvelous collection of Alpha Nu photos and memorabilia from the past century, including old Turkey Pull invitations, 30-40 volumes of the Jayhawker yearbook, a letter from Chancellor Deane Malott to the chapter circa 1973, the original deed to Usher Mansion, and even an original pair of John Palmer Usher's cufflinks. Thank you, Henry Foster '15, for managing the collection of historical memorabilia and building the exhibit. Thanks are also extended to Bud Gollier '62 for donating several items of Usher memorabilia. Vice Chancellor Tim Caboni attended Friday evening and was particularly impressed by the historical exhibit and the storied legacy of Alpha Nu. To no surprise, not even a torrential downpour or blustery cold could keep our golf tournament competitors off the course Saturday morning. Thank you to everyone who endured the rain to make the event successful. Congratulations Tom Curzon '76, Brad Sullivan '76, Chris Fevurly '76, and Mark Sinning '75 for going low and winning the golf tournament. Later that day, the sun finally emerged from the clouds to warm the guests attending the cocktail party atop the Oread Hotel. The venue provided wonderful views of Lawrence and the surrounding countryside. (Continued on page 2)
