By ANDREA WAGNER DN Staff Writer Metteer Elementary students and teachers sang “He’s a jolly good fellow” to the school’s volunteer crossing guard Thursday to celebrate his service to the school. Larry Adolf, a 66-year-old retired postal clerk and handyman, has been walking children across Kimball Road for at least five years now. Every morning between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m., Adolf is out in front of the school, wearing a Santa hat in season, waving to par- ents and passers-by. “There’s not a day that goes by that someone does- n’t say, ‘I waved to Larry today,’” said Metteer’s Prin- Season shines on cipal Susanna Winstead. Winstead and faculty surprised Adolf with a framed certificate and a musical Christmas card with a Dutch Bros. gift card enclosed. Adolf thought it was just another holiday celebration, until he saw all the 600- plus students gathered together to honor him. “They took a lot of time and effort to do what they did,” Adolf said. “I didn’t expect it.” Although he has to miss occasional mornings for doctor appointments, Adolf enjoys being out there to make it safe for children, he said. The best part of the job, to him, is knowing that he is needed. An important part of the job is alerting people to pay attention while See CROSS, page 7A REDDING (AP) — Shas- ta County prosecutors have filed 97 char ges against a 44- year-old man accused of se xually assaulting his teenage niece and keeping her from her family for a month. Charles David Berlinghoff of Los Angeles is set to be arraigned Wednesday on felony counts that include lewd acts with a minor, incest and oral copulation. Berlinghoff says he’s working with his family to find an attorney. According to the jail’s website, Berlinghoff is being held at the Shasta County Jail in lieu of $1,100,000 bail. Berlinghoff Berlinghoff and his niece disappeared Nov. 10, prompting state notices on electronic highway signs, a feature on the ‘‘America’s Most Want- ed’’ website and a mas- sive search around her home city of Redding.
