Jenks was selected to serve as the Interim Manager of the Fair on July 31, 2013, following the sudden and unexpected resignation of the former Manager, Calvin Hastings. Andy Elmore, Chairperson of the Fair's Board, said, "Bobby did an incredible and totally professional job in serving the Fair as our interim manager and in fact had only 30 days to prepare for the return of the HAMFEST this past Labor Day weekend and less than 90 days to prepare for the 89th consecutive Fair in September." Elmore added, "honestly, the exceptional and extraordinary work provided by Bobby on such short notice convinced every Board member that we had selected the right person to lead our Fair forward toward our 100th anniversary in 2024. Bobby is a long-term veteran of fair operations, and he has fully established those credentials with us since July." Jenks is President of Jenks Concessions. Jenks Concessions is a member of the National Independent Concessionaires Association (NICA) and has been providing first quality specialty foods for hundreds of state and county fairs since 1978. Jenks Concessions provides a variety of specialty fair food products such as popcorn, sausage and funnel cakes that are served from custom food trailers at area and regional fairs. ASHBROOK vs. CREST FRIDAY • NOV. 22nd Shelby High School Selected To Participate In E-Tracker Pilot Program Shelby High School was one of four schools in the entire state of North Carolina selected to participate in the E-Tracker pilot program. The program is a conservation based real life scenario that was a "learning experience" for the students infusing in them the need and ways to conserve electrical energy. The E-Track project enabled students to carry out and better understand the scientific method and concepts centered around an actual study of the use of electricity in their homes. Each student was given the task to form a hypothesis as they collected and analyzed data using linear regression and then Phil Biseri, Supervisor of Residential Energy stated their conclusions. The ninth grade Earth Science students, taught by Ms. Kim McDaniel, were selected to complete this special project and report back and give their findings at a special gathering on Friday, November 1st in the school media center. Phil Bisesi, Supervisor of Residential Energy Services with ElectriCities of North Carolina, conducted the session and engaged the students in a question and answer session concerning their findings. The program was assisted locally by Vallery McCoy, Utilities Marketing Specialist for the City of Shelby Utilities. The City of Shelby has been a Public Power community for over 100 years and serves 7,485 customers. The entire emphasis of the program was to make each student and the community aware of the many ways to save electricity. This is beneficial to the individuals to control energy cost and to their electric provider. Shelby Utilities presented each student with an Energy Efficiency Kit which included: a low flow shower head, 14 watt compact fluorescent lamp, 23 watt compact florescent lamps, refrigerator thermometer, hot water gauge, room thermometer, latex spray sealant, and green filter whistles. ElectriCities of North Carolina presented each student with an LED night-light and refreshments to celebrate the program finale.
