"I met a young man named Frank Woodbury '65 when I was going through recruitment. I joined Alpha Iota because of him. His approach was to challenge me to be a part of what he wanted to accomplish in growing the fraternity by improving the academic and athletic standing of the chapter. He even planned to eventually build a new house." After initiation, Bob served as sage, second, third, and fourth counselor, and summer recruitment chairman twice. "We were able to accomplish a lot of the plans set forth by Frank. He was really an inspiration to me and I knew I wanted to serve the chapter to the best of my ability." Graduating with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, Bob went on to work for McDonnell Aircraft/McDonnell Douglas/Boeing, embarking on a 41-year career with the company, starting as a summer intern and concluding with retiring nine years ago as the division director of flight and laboratory operations. "It was quite a ride," he said. "Being in Alpha Iota provided me with the opportunity to develop my leadership and management skills, as well as learning how to interact and communicate with other people." Reminiscing on his time in the house, Bob remembers the fellowship with his Alpha Iota brothers. "That will always be special. Winning the softball championship and the St. Pat's parade twice are memories I will always have. I remember our accomplishments as a chapter when I was an undergraduate, recruiting 46 members one summer for a pledge class. Those experiences were a very important part of my undergraduate career. I wish to preserve the Alpha Iota experience for future members of Sigma Pi because I know how special it was for me." Bob and his wife, Marlo, have two sons and reside in Chesterfield, Missouri. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, golfing, and traveling to visit his children and grandchildren. You can contact Bob at fishermanbobn@sbcglobal.net.
