For Rottenberg, it’s always been about the three-week run of league, division and section championships. “You can be all-world in December, but no one cares in February,” said Rottenberg, who has coached the Spartans since 1986. In that time Rottenberg has produced 21 section champi- ons including Dillon Reid, who captured the 142-pound title in 2009 as a sophomore. Reid fell just short of winning the 154-pound title as a junior in March, but is geared up for another run as he tries to qualify for the state championships for a fourth time. Another senior with a strong shot at qualifying for state is 135-pounder Tyler Demerath. Rottenberg said whether Demerath ends up at 135 or 140 there’s going to be plenty of tough competition across the section, but on any given day his senior can earn a top finish. 171-pounder Bryce Eggert is another wrestler, Rotten- berg said is one good day away from taking some high hon- ors come February. Dan St. John at 112 pounds should also be in the mix at the Masters. Jeff Skaggs brings experience to the Spartans and will likely end up at 215. Then there’s Kyle Case at 145 pounds. “I have high expectations for Kyle,” Rottenberg said, adding Case had poor luck a season ago when it came to draws at major tournaments. Elsewhere, Marco Gonzalez has a firm grip on 103 pounds and freshman Marco Rodriguez will see time at 112 until St. John can wrestle. Kyle Crisel will fill 119. Injuries and ineligibility for now has an opening at 130. Rottenberg is leaning toward senior Trey Samons at 140 and Josh O’Coy should take over 189 once everyone settles down into their weights after New Year’s. At heavyweight, Rottenberg said senior Alex Frank is really coming along nicely thanks to his intelligence. One of the best examples of how strong Red Bluff’s wrestling program has been recently is the number of seniors Courtesy photo Red Bluff seniors Tyler Demerath and Dillon Reid are among the Northern Section’s best. who will be making their first varsity starts this season. Rottenberg said it not only illustrates the recent depth, but the passion of the kids to keep coming out year after year. If a couple of seniors step up, the Spartans should have no problem continuing their year after year success. This year they hope to push further up the ranks of the Northern Section’s elite. Coach Cort Mitchell isn’t just look- ing at the prospects of a Northern Ath- letic League title, but said he wants the Cardinals to compete for a Top 5 spot at the division championship — once all the injuries, eligibility and weight issues settle that is. Like a lot of schools, Corning has some question marks at the start of December, as a slew of newcomers light on mat experience get worked into the fold. However, these Cardinals are grow- ing up quick. Facing perhaps the sec- tion’s two best teams in Chico and Orland in your first two dual meets can do that for you. Calvin Meister continued to grow up last season and finished a heartbreaking fourth at Masters. This season the senior not only has a strong chance of qualifying for the state championship, but he has a new role on his own team — leader. Mitchell said Meister has accepted the challenge and been a leader by example at practice. Another Cardinal Mitchell has high hopes for because of his ability, strength, physicality and willingness to learn is 215-pounder Eric Miranda. Corning hopes to see Durham trans- fer Matt Boles wrestle at 125 pounds, which would give them another threat at sections. Third year junior Martin Solano will fill in at 112 pounds, but may eventual- ly be pushed at the weight class by Fultz and freshman Alonzo Munoz, who has impressed at 119. Freshman David Edson has started to make a name for himself at 125. Mitchell said junior Ramon Lopez could grow into the role at 140 with more mat experience. Freshman Arnulfo Garcia had a pin against Orland and will try to hold onto the 145 position. Dominic Azevedo steps up to 152- pound varsity after a successful run at the junior varsity level. Kenny Kelly is another Cardinal, who shows promise, but needs more mat time at 160 pounds. A slew of Cardinals are competing for for the 189 position including Rogelio Madrigal and Parker Johnson, who is battling an injury. When it comes to freshman, the Car- dinals didn’t get the quantity they were hoping for, but Mitchell said he’s been extremely pleased with the quality. What a young Cardinals team may be lacking in experience could be made up for at practices with strong compe- tition and challenges up-and-down the ladder. If the lineup comes together how Mitchell hopes it does, his team should have no trouble living up to his own expectations.
