Not only do our bodies get exercised, our brains do too. We talk on a vari- ety of subjects, serious ones, comi- cal ones, sad ones, school ones and many more. By the end of our walk we either feel that we have solved the prob- lems of the world or are going to be working at it for a very long time. Sometimes we glance back over the years and recall some of our pre- vious learning experiences. We try to analyze what was done correctly and what we wished we could have another chance at doing. Good educators and good par- ents alike ask themselves all of the above questions. A number of us are into "control" we want to hold on tight to the reins and make things happen. Of course, we are not content to just let them happen. The events must happen just so and for the positive as far as we are con- cerned. Our hearts and egos ache if things don’t turn out as we planned. We are even more discouraged if it has to do with the actions of the young people for whom we feel responsible. Just when parents/teachers have a great pattern set down for rearing that first child, along comes the sec- ond child. Number two sibling no more fits into number one child’s pattern than a square fits into a circle. Now what? About the time we start to feel really insecure, along comes the third child who needs still a different approach. This job of "edu- caring," yes I do mean edu- cating plus care giving. Educaring is a relatively new word that reminds us that neither education nor caring for a child are sepa- rate actions but are com- bined essential learning areas for all of us. Carolyn Barber Lest we come to believe that we are the only generation to weather the perils of parenthood, I share with readers the following excerpts from one of a collection of "Four Minute Essays." "There are times, said Ed Hop- kins, when you want to Let Things Alone, and then again there are times when you want to Med- dle…There was an old man Eustis and his wife, over Sanford Way, that had no end of ‘trouble over their boy. They was always workin’ with him and lecturin’ him and rasslin’ up like all the time; till the old folks up and died, and then there was nobody cared a whoop for the boy, whether he hung hisself or not, and he had the first good spell o’lettin’ alone he’d ever had in his life, and he just turned right around and straightened up and now he owns a bank, and is deacon in the church, and everything. …The Almighty does a heap o’ Lettin’ Folks Alone. Anybody can go to the dops that wants to. The gates of the Bad Place are open day and night. It looks to me very much as if what saves a man (woman) must come from inside. …So I says, Let ‘em Alone … Thus spake Ed Hopkins." -------- -Dr. Frank Crane, 1919 While "educaring," grownups need to keep things in perspective and entertain a sense of humor it is hopeful that I this little essay excerpt will get some of us back on track. Hmm, I wonder what friend and I will discuss on our next walk. Carolyn Barber has been writing her column in the Daily News since 1992. It appears on Saturdays.
