Colossians 3:2 amp. The mind is full of nega- tive thoughts. How do you control these thoughts and how do you get your mind to think what it needs to think, when it needs to think it? One of the ways you control your mind is to set your mind on what is above, on Godly things. As a Christ- ian you need to think on purpose. You need to think about what you are thinking about. You can control your thoughts and with those temptations. Set your mind. You cannot wait till you are in the midst of a temptation to decide what you will do, because if you do that you will fail. You need to decide ahead of time how you will react when you are faced Not setting our minds ahead of time allows them to be set in a negative way— which will cer- tainly cause us to reap negative results. This is a vital concept. We can learn something from the Children of Israel during the time when they were in the desert after escaping from Egypt. 1 Corinthians 10:6-11, tells us the Children of Israel were actually an example to us: " Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. Do not be idol- aters as some of them were; as it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play." We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thou- sand fell in a single day. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by ser- pents, nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come." What was it they did? What can we learn? They did not set their hearts to trust and obey Him. "Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and in their hearts they turned to Egypt," Acts 7:39. If you have a specific struggle decide ahead of time - I am not going to: talk bad about that person, waste my time, over eat, look at things I shouldn't on the computer, spend money I don't have, watch that TV program, get into that unhealthy relationship, get a bad attitude, walk in fear, etc...whatever it is you struggle with. When you set your mind on the outcome it sets a good foundation and it won't be as hard to make the right decision. When you set your alarm you are deciding ahead of time how early you need to get up. You do that to make sure you do not have a negative outcome of being late the next morning. When you go on vacation you set up your reservations to make sure you don't have any negative surprises on that trip. You need to do the same thing in your mind when you are faced with temptations in life. Set your mind on Godly things and think on purpose. The good news is that God wants to help us. Take a moment and pray this from your heart and ask the Lord to help: Lord, help me to set my mind on you and to plan ahead of time how I react to certain situations in my life. I will think on pur- pose.
