Saturday, October 12, 2013 – Daily News 3B Manton Apple Festival sees record turnout By By Patti Anglin Special to the DN Events coordinator Phyllis Penticoff reports that more than 5,000 people attended this year's Manton Apple Festival Oct. 5. The Manton Grange apple pie booth in the main tent sold out all 180 of its apple pies by 2 p.m., according to Cheryl Cord, who oversaw the booth. The events vendors all reported phenomenal sales at what they called Northern California's best event. The food vendors were sold out entirely by closing time, some earlier. A highly visible and popular attraction returning for the second year was the covered wagon pulled by two beautiful, well trained, draft horses owned and operated by local residents, the Hannahs. There were best apple pie awards for both adult and childr categories, judged by KRCR news anchor Mike Mangas and weather chief Mike Krueger, alongside honorary Manton Mayor Rachael Molina. Adult winner was Susan Anthes of Manton and kid's category winner was Bailey Ferguson, also of Manton. New at the event this year was a kid's pie eating contest that proved highly popular. This love of music was evident at the main tent, which was alive with music all day long. All the musicians donated freely of their time and talent, as they have done in years prior, to make the event both memorable and entertaining. Leading off at 9:30 a.m. was an ensemble group of four acoustic musicians led by Tom Spence of the 6th District Old Time Fiddlers Association, who also provided the sound system for the event. The predominant theme was Blue Grass, and Tom led his group in a medley of lively old time favorites. Next on stage, and following the Blue Grass theme, was Matthew Songmaker and The Mountain Messengers. Matthew, who is highly entertaining and a talented musician, is also Manton School's music Tehama Country Real Estate teacher. His group performed new, old and gospel bluegrass, with songs Wagon Wheel and How Mountain Girls Love — obvious crowd favorites. Niki Carlisle, former Manton School music teacher, led her student group and thoroughly entertained the crowd for an hour with beautiful and energetic music. Niki is not only a great teacher and incredible musician, but also an award winning musician. Rounding out the music groups was the well known local Wild Card Band. "To appeal to a wider audience, we mix up some country, vintage rock and blues," said band founder Linda Hasley. Band member and Manton resident Patti Anglin, who also teaches vocals and guitar at Manton School, invited two of her students on stage to perform with the band. Lindsi Dennis and Jade Johnson chose Miranda Lamberts' Mommas Broken Heart to perform. With The Wild Card Band backing them, the girls sounded like pros. Wild Card Band also invited on stage special guest and local professional musician Terry Kirby. Terry played professionally in the Bay Area for 25 years, opening shows for a who's who list of famous entertainers before moving to Shasta County.
