Sigma Phi Epsilon R page 3 Chapter Eternal-Robert Cheney '54 obert Cheney '54 passed on to Chapter Eternal August 8 after a short battle with cancer. He was born August 15, 1928, in Montgomery, Alabama. Bob served for 22 years as Chapter counselor for the Alabama Epsilon Chapter at Auburn University Montgomery and was awarded the Order of the Golden Heart, the highest national award for volunteer service to Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. When he was 18 years old he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served three years during World War II. He re-enlisted in 1951 and served during the Korean conflict until 1952, attaining the rank of sergeant. He graduated from Auburn University in business administration in 1954 and was employed by Alabama Farm Bureau Insurance Company, which later became Alfa Insurance Companies. He retired as vice president after 41 years. Bob was active in many historical/genealogy organizations and various civic activities. Gaston Bush '54 wanted the pledges to go into his father's hardware store and get some primer cord and blow off the SAE lion's head, but good reasoning told us not too," shared Bob in 2011 when he was interviewed for the spring newsletter. Bob is survived by his wife, Margaret Ann Hatchett Cheney, and three children: Robert Jr., Elizabeth, and John. He is also survived by four grandchildren and his sister, Margaret Cheney Collier. Reagan '57 "Putting together Homecoming decorations in the front yard of the SigEp house on Gay Street. We used a lot of chicken wire and toilet paper. Fortunately, we had some engineering students who helped with the construction. All fraternities then had front yard decorations. My years there were 1953-57. We had the president of the student body and the ugliest man on campus." James lives in Tucker, Ga., with his wife, Kay. C. Ed Olson Jr. '60 "There are too many memories which are all fantastic. Probably the best memory of all is the brotherhood and friendships established. Our home on North Gay Street; the formal weekend; Wakiki party; and beach trips could never be forgotten. Brothers like Squibber, Coon, Beefy, Bird Wopper, Weaser, and especially Doc and Jaboo who ran our house. I could mention many more and don't want to forget any!" J.
