7 Sigma Chi Chapter Eternal H. Grant Thomas '40 entered Chapter Eternal on January 13, 2013. Beloved husband of Beverly Wernick Thomas, he was a resident of Bloomfield, Conn. He loved his alma mater, "The Big Red," where he played varsity basketball; was president of his senior class and the Sigma Chi Fraternity; and a member of the senior Class Honorary Society, among many other activities. "Pops" will be dearly missed by all his family and friends. Lyman E. Lorensen '45 entered Chapter Eternal on August 14, 2013. He studied chemistry at the University of Nebraska. Lyman was a resident of Davis, Calif., at the time of his passing. Hubert Benn '49 entered Chapter Eternal on May 2, 2013. Hubert loved Sigma Chi and appreciated receiving news from the Chapter. His wife, Ester, recalls meeting Hubert at the Sigma Chi house in 1946 and the "many wonderful memories." He was a resident of Hemet, Calif., at the time of his passing. James D. Waring '50 entered Chapter Eternal on December 30, 2012, after fighting a battle with Parkinsons. Jim was a resident of Wheat Ridge, Colo., and is survived by his wife, Lois, four children, and six grandchildren. Lois described Jim as "a blessing to all his family." She said, "We will miss his laughter and his love." David J. Hamzeh '07 entered Chapter Eternal on May 19, 2013. He worked for an online marketing company, Demandforce, in San Francisco. David is survived by his parents, Shahin and Mary, sister, Nicole, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. Alumni News Philip E. Fredrickson '47 lives in Seattle, Wash., with his wife, Hedy, who does her best to keep him healthy. At 89, he tries to stay active. Phil enjoys hearing about the Sigs of his time. Hon. Robert A. Wenke '48 retired in 1986 and has since worked as an arbitrator and mediator. He and his wife, Suzanne, live in Long Beach, Calif., and have two children. Gerald W. Ballard '49 is enjoying spending his winters in Maui, Hawaii, and visiting his sister twice a year in Lincoln. Gerald says, "All is well." E-mail: gqballard@comcast.net Dr. Dale N. Anderson '50 resides in Topeka, Kan., with his wife, Evelyn, an Alpha Phi. He has three daughters and two great-grandsons. Dale remembers many of his buddies from Alumni Update Lincoln, including Dr. Charles Curtiss '52, John Anderson '50, and Paul McKie '51. He hopes to be at the Homecoming party this year. Maher III '51 and his wife, Helen, retired at the Large Riderhood Community in Silver Spring, Md., just outside of Washington, D.C. They are both active and enjoy the beauty, history, and politics of the area. He sold his consulting business in 2009 and retired from active and reserve duty in the U.S. Army as a colonel in 2006. The AAPG is a worldwide association of 33,000 members. Larry resides in Houston, Texas, and is the president of Spartan Petroleum Corporation. Hank remembers moving into 1510 Vine St., and his first roommate, Bus Whitehead '50. Donald D. Bell, M.D. '60 retired after 49 years preforming vascular surgery. "I miss it! I thought it was a good time to do it, but I'm adapting slowly." He is proud of Alpha Epsilon for continuing to "right the ship" and maintaining a strong legacy at the University. He and his wife, Nancy, live in Norfolk, Neb., and have four children: Ann, Kelly, Amy, and Scott '97. Hon. Grant S. Meiner '64 and his wife, Lucile, are expecting their fourth grandchild.
