6 The Husker Sig Alumni Chapter Gathers Steam am pleased to report that The Greater Isupporting theChapter continues to beNebraska Area Alumni engaged in undergraduate Chapter and our membership is strong. The focus for this year has been to provide support, guidance, and mentoring for our students and incoming members for the fall of 2013. We have been working closely with our newly elected Grand Consul at International Headquarters, Mike Greenberg, Illinois Wesleyan '82, to make sure we are providing the necessary assistance and leadership development programs for Alpha Epsilon. SPRING LUNCHEON RECAP Meanwhile, we continue to have a very busy, very productive 2013. Our spring luncheon took place at the Isles Reception Hall on April 25 in Havelock. Many of you will remember that Havelock was the original home of Misty's, a fine Sigma Chi gathering spot. Twenty-four brothers attended the luncheon. We reviewed the progress of the undergraduate Chapter and its work with the University of Nebraska. We noted that our goal for occupancy, given the current status, would be around 30 live-in members at the fall term. I'm personally proud to report that we are meeting that goal and building membership with fine young men. We were also able to report that the unprecedented support and encouragement that we have received from the International Fraternity has bolstered our resolve. Alpha Epsilon, with significant capital commitment to the infrastructure at 1510 Vine, is here to stay. We plan to continue operating independently and successfully until a fair and equitable compromise can be made between the University of Nebraska and Sigma Chi International Headquarters. SUMMER GOLF OUTING Over the past four years the alumni brothers have gathered to play golf at the impressive Quarry Oaks Golf Course in South Bend, Nebraska. We have had the golf outing each year on the Friday before the first Saturday Nebraska football game. The tradition was continued this year. We had a terrific event at the Country Club of Lincoln on July 26 for undergraduates, new members, and parents. The purpose of the meeting was to give those who are newly associating with Sigma Chi a taste for the culture, positive values, and impact of Sigma Chi. I am delighted to report that this was one of those evenings that define what it truly means to be a Sig. We had more than 60 attend this event. HOMECOMING RECEPTION Take note that our annual Homecoming reception has been scheduled for October 5, immediately following the Illinois football game. While Illinois and Homecoming in the same breath seems strange, we are looking forward to seeing many of you come by for the festivities. The reception will be held at the US Bank Building located at 233 South 13th, Suite 2000, 20th floor. Kick-off is at 11 a.m., so the reception will run from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Alumni Chapter will host hors d'oeuvres and there will be a cash bar. Come and see old friends and new Sigs. FALL MEETING We will hold our fall meeting in Omaha this year instead of Lincoln to remain in contact with Alpha Epsilon alumni located in the Omaha area. The luncheon is scheduled for noon on October 24. The location will be at DJ's Dugout at 636 N. 114th Street (114th and Dodge). HOLIDAY RECEPTION Please mark your calendars for the return of the annual Holiday Reception at the home of Kris and Ron Harris '64 in Lincoln. This annual event is one of the highlights of the year for the Greater Nebraska Area Alumni Chapter. The reception will be held at the Harris family home at 9121 Thornwood Court on December 11 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. RETURN YOUR BIOGRAPHICAL UPDATE Finally, we are hopeful that you received communication in July asking for your updated information and a current e-mail address. We want to hear from our alumni and one of the most effective ways of communication is e-mail. Keep in touch and please return your updated information if you have not already done so. As goes the local alumni, so goes the undergraduate fraternity. If you're already engaged and involved, thank you. If you aren't, give some serious thought to doing so. You'll find the experience of reconnecting with your Sig roots gratifying and you'll also find opportunities to enjoy getting to know the young men carrying on the tradition of Sigma Chi at the University of Nebraska. Believe me, both are gratifying. Get in touch with me if you would like to know more. In Hoc, Curt Denker '77 President Greater Nebraska Area Alumni Chapter cdenker@pinnbank.com My View: Alumni Musings (Continued from page 5) "Woody" Denker '77, whose steadiness, resolve, and compassion have resurrected a moribund Alumni Chapter. Chapter Advisor Trey Pittenger '01, whose enthusiasm and dogged commitment to do the right thing have been an inspiration to a handful of young men who, instead of quitting, pushed forward to reclaim the legacy of Sigma Chi. Bob Seidell '65, whose steady and persistent leadership rallied almost 300 alumni to raise nearly $2.7 million to resurrect our historically significant, but aging, Chapter House. All in all, we leaned into one another and, true to our undergraduate experiences, had one another's back. One of my mentors once said, "Never be afraid to start small." Alpha Epsilon, today, is not big in numbers. But it is big in heart, sound in values, growing again in the right way, with the right young men, with the time-honored values that made me proud to be a Sig in my young college days, and sustain me now. I have great expectations for the days and weeks ahead for that place in which each of us who took the pledge of Sigma Chi placed our trust way back when. That is, gentlemen, our Sigma Chi. May the legacy, now a mere 130 years young, continue through the young men who now— enthusiastically and ably—wear the White Cross. I challenge you, as an alumnus, to step forward to join those fellow Sigs who are working with our undergraduates to carry on the values, traditions, and contributions of Sigma Chi at the University of Nebraska. You are more important than you will ever know. Even in our resurgence, we need you. We need each other. If you would like to get involved, please contact me and I'd be more than happy to help you find your niche in Alpha Epsilon. In Hoc, Steve jstevedavis@comcast.net Editor's Note: My View will be a regular feature of The Husker Sig, exploring topics of relevance to the fraternity and leadership. Steve Davis '67 is the first contributor. The main thrust of his career was the advertising business, where he eventually became the CEO of three large advertising agencies, J. Walter Thompson Chicago, Young & Rubicam New York, and Wells Rich BDDP New York. He has retired to Santa Fe, New Mexico, but still keeps his hand on the pulse of business by providing capital for start up companies and is involved with volunteer work for local and national non-profits and his "first love," Sigma Chi.
