8A – Daily News – Saturday, September 18, 2010 Religion Faith&Worship Church news Concert Sunday Current events in the North State Courtesy photo Judy and Rich Cottingham will be in concert at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19, at Neighborhood Full Gospel Church, 901 South St., in Corning. For information call 824-2323. Sharing stories of Sudan Author and co-founder of Mercy Beyond Borders, Mar- ilyn Lacey, RSM, will discuss her work in southern Sudan at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, in Sacred Heart Parish Hall, 2355 Monroe St. Lacey, a Sister of Mercy with a quick wit and keen sense of observation, will tell many of the stories that inspired her book, “This Flowing Toward Me: A Story of God Arriving in Strangers.” One such story recounts the joyous reunification in a Kenyan refugee camp of Lacey and a young Sudanese man she’d met 12 years prior, when the man was only 14 years old in a Sudanese camp. The young man recognized Lacey all those years later and enthusiastically recalled their first meeting when they had a shared a few hours of conversa- tion. Lacey writes, "The lesson in this encounter is certainly not that I am memorable, but rather that refugees are rarely paid attention to. They thirst for recognition and welcome. And when someone does listen, does want to hear their story, does treat them with basic human respect, it creates a precious, indelible memory. These are small things, but oh, so important." Mercy Beyond Borders employs three strategies to alle- viate poverty in southern Sudan: education of women and girls, providing seed capital to women and promotion of maternal and child health. The organizations website recounts the story of a preteen who walked 14 hours to attend school. The young woman related that, "The last 4 hours I walk uphill with my suitcase on my head. If it slips off," she said, "it tumbles a long way down and I have to chase it and begin again." Lacey responds that for girls like this, "Any difficulties melt away when compared to the chance of becoming liter- ate, postponing an early arranged marriage, and developing their innate talents. Sadly, fewer than 15% of girls in South- ern Sudan ever have the opportunity for schooling. Mercy Beyond Borders is working to change that." Lacey’s talk is free and open to the public. A voluntary offering will be collected to support the work of Mercy Beyond Borders. For more information, call Kathy at 529- 4958 or visit www.mercybeyondborders.org. I must say, I really enjoyed compet- ing in the Great National Canoe and Kayak Races this summer on the Sacramento River on July 21. My wife’s uncle, Carl Engel, and I placed second in the "50 years plus Double Paddlers Division." It was a long ways from the Antelope bridge to the I-5 bridge- three times! We were left a bit sore from the Marathon, but we had a good time. We’ll sign up again. The event was a wonderful oppor- tunity to enjoy God’s beautiful cre- ation-water, wind, and sun. The beginning of a new school year is upon us. All students are invited to meet at the flagpole on their school campus at 7 a.m. on Sept. 22, for "See You at the Pole." This is just days away. SYATP is an annual student- lead event held on the fourth Wednes- day morning of September. Partici- pants will gather for prayer and encouragement an hour before school. Visit www.syatp.org for more. Several local youth pastors are net- working, and multi-church events in the works. To get in the information and participation loop, please contact Pastor Daryl Jones 527-5717. The Joshua Fest Christian Music Festival usually held in Quincy over Labor Day weekend is slated for Oct. 22-24, at Amador County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, just outside of Plac- erville. Information can be found at www.joshuafest.com The holiday season is just around the corner. Looking ahead to Decem- ber -please take note, our very own Masterworks Chorale is planning a special musical presentation. If you would like to join the group, call Pas- tor Mark Franklin 527-4203 for the practice schedule. No auditions are needed. Coming in December, is the release of "Voyage of the Dawn Treader," the third movie based on a book from "The Chronicles of Naria" series by C.S. Lewis. This year, producers have teamed up with Franklin Graham’s Samaritan’s Purse to promote the Operation Christmas Child shoe box project in conjunction with the film. You can get an exclusive look of the movie trailer at www.samari- tanspurse.org. Community Baptist Church of Red Bluff will again collect shoe box gifts for the Operation Christmas Child project. OCC Collections week is an annual event coordinated by Samari- tan’s Purse in November, the week before Thanks- giving Day. Prepare those shoe box gifts. Information to be found at http://www.samari- tanspurse.org. notices are in the mail. For information call me at 527-0947 or email to jlau- riem@att.net. Each year across North America, Europe, and Australia, millions of chil- dren and families-along with churches, schools, businesses, and civic groups prepare shoe box gifts. OCC has become the world’s largest children’s Christmas charity project. Jay Nelson GodTalk In July, I enjoyed the farewell con- cert of the Beane Family at the First Church of God. They performed with Ryan Seaton and Higher Ground, as part of the Southern Gospel Music series. The next scheduled concert is Nov. 6, with "The Greenes." Please support this concert series financially, so the musical events can continue to be offered to the community with free admission. Oct. 2, our local Salvation Army has their annual fundraiser-the Kettle Kick-Off Dinner at the Veteran’s Hall in Red Bluff. For information please call Major Frank Severs at 527-8530. October is celebrated as "Pastor Appreciation Month". All Tehama County pastors and spouses have been invited to a special "Pastor Apprecia- tion Dinner" on Saturday, Oct. 16. This dinner served to honor all local pastors was originally planned for the first Saturday of October, but was re- scheduled, so it would not conflict with the Salvation Army fundraising event. Invitations for the Pastor Apprecia- tion Dinner were sent to 82 Tehama County churches. Change of date Many churches already plan special ways to honor their own pastors. This is excellent, and it should be done. The Paul the Apostle instructed his student Timo- thy that "The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching" (1 Timothy 5:17). Please encourage your pastor to attend this special meal, as we honor them "Tehama County style". Finally, thank you to all who worked to make the "Back to School" project a huge success. This was defi- nitely a community team effort. Many served and supported the pancake breakfast at Bethel Assembly of God. Some $2,200 was dropped in the mini backpacks around the county. Over 100 shoppers helped at the "Great Shopping Day" at our local Walmart store, bringing smiles to the faces of over 600 children. Thanks also, to the beauticians who offered their skill at "Cuts for Kids" at the Red Bluff River Park the following day. Numerous churches, businesses, organizations and individuals see the value of our local children. These have taken the success of the Back to School project "personal," and have sent it over the top. Bravo, Tehama County. Because of your efforts, many children have now gone school with heads held high, "dressed for success, feelin’ like a million bucks." God bless all of you. Jay Nelson is a Tehama County lay minister who has led the Operation Christmas Child ministry for the county over the past decade and more. OCC is a ministry of Samaritan's Purse that seeks to bring Christmas to impoverished children all over the world. House Church: Some chose to skip the sermon, worship at home DALLAS (AP) — For some American Christians, the trappings of a normal church are distracting. Members of ‘‘house churches’’ are part of what experts say is a fundamental shift in the way U.S. Chris- tians think about church. They say skip the ser- mons, costly church build- ings and large, faceless crowds. House church is about relationships forged in small faith communities. In general, house churches consist of 12 to 15 people who share what’s going on in their lives, often turning to Scriptures for guidance. They rely on the Tehama County Church Directory HOYT-COLE CHAPEL OF THE FLOWERS 816 Walnut St. - Red Bluff ABUNDANT LIFE FELLOWSHIP — 21080 Luther Rd. — Pastor J.E.
