Corning’s junior quarter- back rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns on a night where the Spartans’ defense held the rest of the Cardinals’ running game in check. Corning coach John Studer opened up his play- book, Friday, to utilize his junior quarterback’s athlet- icsm and it paid off early and often. On the first play of Corn- ing’s second possession the Cardinals lined up in a shot- gun formation instead of their traditional Wing-T and Holland took off on an option play 53 yards for the game’s first score. “It was a dream ever since you’re a little kid play- ing in this game, growing up in Corning,” Holland said. With the win Corning pulled within one win of tying the all-time series. Red Bluff leads the series dating back to 1921, 23-22-1. Holland’s first quarter scamper was the only score of the first half as the teams combined to fumble three times. Corning threatened to score again in the final sec- onds of the first half, driving the ball to Red Bluff’s 3- yard line. Tyler McIntyre scored on a sweep play, but the touch- down was called back on a Corning penalty and the Red Bluff defense held from there. The Spartans ground game got working on their second possession of the second half. The Spartans battled hard during the fourth quar- ter to climb back into the game. Following Corning’s sec- ond fumble of the night, Red Bluff had the ball at the Car- dinals’ 16-yard line. How- ever the Spartans’ drive was stopped at the 1-foot line turning the ball back over to Corning with four minutes remaining. Red Bluff then helped Corning out, by jumping offsides on consecutive plays to take the pressure off the Cardinals’ offense. From there Corning ran out the clock. For a team outscored 104-21 in their first two games, it was a noticeable improvement from the Spar- tans. “The kids stepped up,” Chico offense downs Red Bluff coach John Miller said. “But we have to eliminate the stu- pid mistakes.” Assistant coach Dave Rottenberg agreed. “We showed so much growth in a lot of kids tonight,” he said. Next for the Spartans (0- 3) is a road trip to Chico, before coming back home for a four-game homestand. Meanwhile, the Cardi- nals (3-0) will have to get up for another emotional game, as they host Shasta in a matchup where playoff seeding could be on the line for both schools. (AP) — Randy Wolf pitched a three-hitter for his first complete game of the season and the Milwaukee Brewers kept the San Francisco Giants from extending their lead in the NL West with a 3-0 victory Friday night. The Giants remained a half-game ahead of second- place San Diego, which lost 14-4 at St. Louis. San Fran- cisco is still in sole posses- sion of first place in the divi- sion in September for the first time since 2003, the club’s last year in the play- offs. Prince Fielder hit an RBI single in the first, Carlos Gomez drove in a run on a groundout in the fifth and Milwaukee scored another on reliever Jeremy Affeldt’s wild throw home for a cost- ly error in the seventh. Wolf (12-11) tossed his 13th career complete game and ninth shutout. SOCCER Chico 3 Red Bluff 1 By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor The Spartans’ strong sec- ond half wasn’t enough to overcome a pair of first half goals, Friday and rival Chico once again beat Red Bluff 3-1. Chico threatened early and often in the first half, finally breaking through midway through for the game’s opening goal. The Panthers added a second goal off of a low ball crossed through the box that was hammered home. Red Bluff had some luck on their side on two more Panther attempts. A header from a corner hit the frame in the opening minutes and a possible goal in the waning seconds of the half was called back for off- sides. Down 2-0, Red Bluff came out a different team in the second half, controlling possession and threatening the Chico goal. Carlos Mendoza made several fine efforts in goal to keep Chico from expanding their lead. Chico finally got a third goal after Mendoza made a brilliant diving save, but the rebound sat up at the 6-yard line and was put in the back of the net. But the Spartans fought back with intensity. Red Bluff got on the board on a perfectly execut- ed corner kick when Daniel Gonzalez headed home a Ryann Almeida cross to the far corner. With the lead cut to two goals, Red Bluff kept apply- ing the pressure. Skylar Garcia blocked a Panther clearance attempt and turned it into a goal scoring opportunity. Minutes later Gonzalez found David Gonzalez with a nice through ball that led to another scoring chance. Enrique Ascenio hit the crossbar from about 25 yards out on a free kick. Each time however the Spartans could not find the back of the net. Red Bluff travels to Foothill on Sept. 24. Seaman had six aces, five kills and five digs.
