He has designed large-scale art pieces that reflect the unique historical and cultural significance of their surroundings while also serving as emotional touchpoints for viewers. The pieces he's created have graced a wide range of public and institutional spaces, including transportation hubs, libraries, parks and plazas, universities, and research centers. One of his most recent commissions is the breathtaking Waterfront Park in Vancouver, Washington. Featuring an enormous, suspended structure anchored by steel cables and a pier that extends out 90 feet over the water, the installation gives the feeling of sailing on the Columbia River. Other aspects of the installation include an interactive water feature of the Columbia River Watershed with a cast bronze topographic map at the headwaters. Regularly, children play in the water while adults read the history. In November, at an intimate evening of celebration and brotherhood, undergraduates, friends, and alumni gathered to honor his decades of achievement with the Sigma Phi Epsilon Citation, an award presented to a select group of alumni who have accomplished uncommon success in their careers. His brothers recalled his many contributions to Oregon Alpha as chapter president and recruitment chairman. Darron Trobetsky, Indiana of Pennsylvania '94, representing SigEp's National Board of Directors, presented the award. "I have kept many of my SigEp friends in the five decades since graduation," Kirkland said regarding how much being part of the Fraternity has meant to him. "They are more important now than during those college years." Friendships cast at Oregon Alpha continue to be important. A National Endowment for the Arts fellow, Kirkland served as the artist for the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial in Washington, D.C. He called the memorial an "emotional tribute to the many who served in the U.S. military and whose lives were forever changed by wounds sustained during their service." Some of his best-known works can be seen at New York's Penn Station, the headquarters of the American Red Cross and the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine in Washington, D.C., and Hong Kong Airport Central Train Station. His current commission is the National Peace Corps Park in Washington, D.C. Visit his website to see some of his work at larrykirkland.com. Thank you, Larry, for being our chapter brother!
