MAINE ALPHA - UNIVERSITY OF MAINE SPRING 2024 RED DOOR NEWS I t is my pleasure to announce that Matt Rodrigue '04 has received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Grand Chapter. I met Matt roughly 21 years ago in my parents' living room to interview for the Balanced Man Scholarship, which started my SigEp journey. While we spent only one year as undergraduates together, Matt has been an instrumental volunteer in his years post- graduation. FRATERNAL RESPONSIBILITIES Matt has been involved in the investment and finance side of our operations, helping us pay off the mortgage on 375 College Avenue while saving a significant nest egg for the massive house renovation we are about to start. Matt was instrumental in helping us establish and endow two scholarship funds: the Shawn McKenna Fund and the Andrew Gerke Memorial Scholarship. Nationally, Matt has served on the SPE Educational Foundation Investment Committee and been a presenter at Carlson Leadership Academy. As an undergraduate, he also served on the National Board of Directors. Matt is a champion for undergraduates experiencing the Grand Chapter and embarking on leadership development. He graciously hosts many undergraduate executive retreats, providing an excellent opportunity for them to get away from the chapter house and focus on leading the organization. This was a core part of his own undergraduate development, which he passes to future generations, the true heart of volunteering. RARE COMPANY Matt joins Richard Crommett '55 (1994), Ben Haskell '66 (1993) and me (2021) as Maine Alpha recipients of this award. There are 461 brothers in Sigma Phi Epsilon who have received this award from the Grand Chapter. The award is given for more than a decade of service to SigEp. In the coming years, we hope it translates into the Exemplary Service Award (20 years) and eventually the Order of the Golden Heart (30 years). Though a small sample size, Maine Alphas are three times more likely to receive this award than the Grand Chapter membership. This should only increase going forward. We held a Zoom call to celebrate on April 21, 2024. Members from as far back as the mid-to- late 1960s to current undergraduates attended. We also had numerous members of the Grand Chapter attend, a testament to the mark that Matt has made. Congratulations, Matt!
